“I’m sorry,” I said, my voice muffled against my mother’s shoulder. An apology for five lost years, for all the worry I had caused them.

Fortunately, the doctor said my problems weren’t as serious as they had feared. What I needed most was time and the comfort of my family.

I also started seeing old friends, classmates I had almost lost touch with during my time in Boston.
