He Broke Me Quietly, So I Left Quietly Chapter 06

Five years later, at the border of Veria.

A minor armed skirmish had just come to an end here.

Dressed entirely in black, Liam stood outside a crude field medical tent.

He had grown gaunt, with deep dark circles beneath his eyes from years of chronic insomnia.

For five years, he had lived in a daze.

He had handed his company over to a professional manager and poured all his energy into international medical aid programs.

Where war or disaster struck, he arrived with massive shipments of medical supplies.

The public saw him as a generous philanthropist, but only he knew he was atoning for his sins. He was searching the world for a miracle that didn’t exist.

“Mr. Bennett, thank you so much for your donation—one million US dollars, plus three trucks full of medical supplies.”

The local Red Cross director shook Liam’s hand, full of gratitude.

“Our contracted medical specialist has just finished surgery. She is a true hero to us. Allow me to introduce you two.”

Liam nodded listlessly and stayed silent.

Heroes meant nothing to him. He only wished to finish the donation procedures and head for the next war-torn region.

The tent flap opened.

I stepped out wearing a white coat and a surgical mask.

My hair was cut short. I looked thinner but stood straight and strong.

“Dr. Carter, excellent work!” The coordinator stepped forward. I pulled off my mask, and Liam’s breath caught completely.

The surrounding chatter, the wind, even the thud of his own heartbeat all faded into the background. His gaze remained fixed firmly on my face.

He had traced this face countless times in his dreams. I was leaner, my skin tanner, and my eyes far sharper than they once were—yet it was Elara. He could never mistake her.

“Elara…”

Liam choked out the name and rushed over to grip my arms.

“Elara! You’re alive! You’re truly alive!”

His eyes were bloodshot. Five years of regret, pain, and despair turned into joy in that moment.

He wanted to pull me into his arms. He wanted to tell me every apology he had held inside for five years.

But I only frowned slightly.

I looked down at his hands gripping my arms.

“Sir, please let go.”

Liam froze.

He had never expected that after all these years apart, I would regard him as a total stranger.

“Elara, it’s me. It’s Liam.” His voice was desperate. His grip tightened without him realizing it. “Are you still angry at me? I’m sorry. I know I was wrong. I know that now—”

“Security.”

Ignoring his incoherent pleas, I turned to the nearby security officers.

“This man is agitated. Please escort him out. We can’t have him disturbing the patients.”

Two security officers stepped forward and pried Liam away.

“Let go of me! Elara, look at me!” Liam thrashed wildly.

I turned and walked back into the tent, and his heart twisted into a tight knot.
