He Broke Me Quietly, So I Left Quietly Chapter 03

He Broke Me Quietly, So I Left Quietly Chapter 03

Mia ended up staying at our place for two whole weeks. To help her with her depression, Liam spared no effort spoiling her rotten. He bought her gifts every day, took her out for fun, and even introduced her to all the important healthcare clients I had spent years building relationships with.

I kept my head down and behaved perfectly docile. I left early and came back late each day, finalizing my overseas immigration paperwork and liquidating my domestic assets.

One afternoon, I came home early to pick up a very important set of design blueprints. They were the project drafts my father had left me. They were the only thing I truly cared about before leaving.

But when I opened the locked drawer in the study, the blueprints had vanished without a trace.

A sharp sense of panic crashed over me. I rushed straight to the living room.

Mia was sitting on the sofa, casually eating cherries.

“Where are my blueprints?” I asked coldly.

Mia pouted innocently.

“Elara, why take your frustration out on me just because you lost something? I never went into your study.”

The moment she finished speaking, my eyes landed on her designer bag, which she had tossed carelessly onto the couch. The opening was wide enough for me to see a familiar corner of brown paper.

I walked over, grabbed the bag, and dumped everything out onto the sofa. Sure enough, the blueprints my father had left me were mixed in with her makeup.

“What are you doing going through my things!” Mia shrieked. She lunged forward to grab the papers back.

“They’re mine!” I held tight to the blueprints.

We struggled. Mia pulled hard.

A sharp tearing sound cut through the air. The blueprints, which held my father’s final work, were torn clean in two.

The half in Mia’s hand knocked over a glass of juice. Ink and juice spread across the paper instantly, ruining it completely.

I stared at the mess. Rage surged through my veins. I raised my hand to slap her, but before I could, a hand grabbed my wrist from behind.

“Elara! Cut it out!”

He pushed me aside without hesitation and shielded Mia behind him.

Mia’s eyes turned red immediately.

“Liam, I just wanted to check out the design out of curiosity… and then she lashed out at me.”

Liam looked at me with nothing but blame in his eyes.

“Elara, you’ve gotten completely out of line! You were going to hit her over nothing?”

“Nothing?”

I pointed at the ruined papers on the table. Those were the only thing my father had left me. I had spent an entire year improving those drafts. And she had torn them into trash. He called that nothing?

Liam pulled a checkbook from his suit pocket and wrote down a number.

“Enough. The blueprints are ruined, so let’s not drag this out.”

“This ten-thousand-dollar check covers the project in full Mia can keep the damaged drafts for reference. And you’re done with this project.”

I stared at the check. The project my father had left me was worth at least a million dollars in profit. He wrote off my father’s life’s work for a measly ten grand and handed it straight to Mia.

I didn’t argue anymore. There was no point in arguing here any longer, and this place held nothing for me anymore.

I turned around and walked out the door without looking back.

My phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out. It was a message from Liam. Maybe because I had left so decisively, he realized he had been too harsh and was trying to make up for it.

“Elara, I acted out of line earlier. I’ve been so wrapped up looking after Mia during her illness that I lost sight of you. There’s a major medical charity gala tomorrow evening—get ready and join me. I plan to propose again. Let’s leave the past behind and make a fresh start.”

I took a deep breath of the cold air outside.

Before I could reply, my phone lit up again. It wasn’t another message from Liam, but an email and a text message: my visa had finally been approved, and my flight was confirmed for tomorrow night.

This departure would be permanent, with no turning back.
