He Broke Every Rule for Her, Except When It Came to Me Chapter 11

Damiano stood rooted on the dirt path, feet like they’d been poured full of lead.

He wanted to call out, but his throat had closed up completely.

All he could do was watch me disappear.

That’s when the clouds broke.

Rain came down in sheets, like the sky itself was weeping for every year I’d spent buried under that family’s

rules.

He didn’t move. Didn’t seek shelter. Let the cold rain soak straight through him.

Memory surfaced, unbidden-a rainy day, years ago, standing under a café awning.

The first time we ever met.

He hadn’t brought an umbrella. I’d smiled and offered him mine.

“You don’t have one? Here, take this.”

He’d meant to decline-his driver was minutes away-but something made him reach out and take it

anyway.

“Thank you. Leave me your number, I’ll return it sometime.”

I’d waved him off with an easy laugh.

“Don’t worry about it. It’s just an umbrella.”

And I walked off into the rain without looking back.

Same kind of rain, all these years later.

Once, someone had handed him warmth without being asked. Now no one ever would again.

The storm finally broke.

Clouds parted, and a rainbow bent across the horizon.

Damiano stood there long after, until the light was completely gone, before he finally turned and dragged himself away.

For days after that, he stood outside my house.

Every time he saw me, he wanted to close the distance-and every time, my cold, unreadable stare stopped him where he stood.

He’d linger outside the schoolhouse window instead, watching me teach.

Most of the kids in that classroom wore hand-me-downs, the desks were falling apart.

Damiano went to the school board and the mayor, donated a considerable sum, funded new roads, rebuilt the town’s infrastructure from the ground up.

Within two years, the place was unrecognizable-nothing left of the town that had once been forgotten by

everyone.

Still, whenever I passed him, I looked straight through him.

Refused to exchange a single word.

He kept coming back.

People in town started to wonder aloud why some rich stranger kept pouring money into their community.

Someone finally asked him outright.

He just smiled, faint. “For someone I love.”

The words made their way back to me eventually. I only found it bitterly funny.

If there had ever been real love in him, would he have let himself hurt me, again and again, without a second thought?

Everything he was doing now was nothing but a performance of guilt for his own benefit.

For a long time after that, Damiano kept showing up in the corners of my life.

I stayed distant. Cold.

There was too much between us now.

Time might dull the ache, but the damage was carved into me for good-every scar still there, still real, impossible to ever forget.

THE END
