After settling my grandmother, I went straight back to the estate, heading for the security office.

Bianca cut me off in the hallway.

“Elena, honestly, I never would have guessed your grandfather was a thief.”

I stared her down.

“Don’t jump to conclusions before the truth’s out. If someone planted that on purpose, I won’t let it go.”

She leaned in close to my ear.

“Just between us—it was me. So what? Damiano will protect me no matter what.”

I slapped her across the face before I even decided to.

Slap!

She clutched her cheek, tears spilling instantly. And that’s when Damiano appeared.

“Elena! Enough of this!”

My eyes burned.

“I’m out of line? She planted that pendant on my grandfather herself! That’s a setup!”

“Enough!” he snapped. “Watch what you’re accusing people of!”

“She just admitted it to my face!”

Bianca sniffled, shaking her head.

“It’s not Elena’s fault. I shouldn’t have brought up the pendant at all. I’m the reason her grandfather got arrested…”

Damiano’s face darkened.

“As the Donna of this family, striking someone and slandering the innocent.”

He turned to his men. “Discipline. Twenty across the face!”

Two soldiers seized my arms in an iron grip before I could move.

Crack—

My vision blurred, my ears rang, but I clenched my jaw and didn’t let a single sound out.

The staff whispered around me.

“The Donna’s really lost it this time…”

“Well, her grandfather’s the one who can’t keep his hands to himself. Country people, no manners…”

Twenty strikes, and they let go.

I sat on the floor, my face burning.

Damiano walked away with Bianca on his arm and never looked back.
