He Bet My Life On A Table And Called It Justice For Her Chapter 04

I didn’t know how long had passed.

From the front seat, Keaton Rusk, Thane’s personal assistant, spoke hesitantly.

“Mr. Calder… Miss Marlowe hasn’t moved. Something’s wrong.”

“She’s pretending.” Thane’s voice held no warmth, only irritation. “You know how good she is at that.”

Keaton went silent.

Thane yanked his tie loose and lit a cigarette.

Then his phone rang.

A panicked voice burst through the speaker.

“Sir! Miss Maddox had another episode after the thunder. The doctor says the shock triggered acute anemia.”

The second the call ended, Thane slammed his foot into the car door.

The car screeched to a stop, tires slicing through the rain.

Thane threw the door open, got out, and dragged me from the back seat.

He hurled me onto the flooded road.

“You knew there would be thunderstorms today, didn’t you?”

He grabbed the front of my shirt, his voice cold enough to cut. “You keep trying to die because you want to pull me away from Greer. You wanted her to break down, didn’t you?”

Rain poured down, washing blood and dirt from my skin.

It couldn’t wash away the cold buried in my bones.

I shook so hard my teeth nearly cracked. The world in front of me began to blur.

Keaton ran over with an umbrella and grabbed Thane’s arm.

“Sir, Miss Maddox can’t wait. You should see her first.”

Thane took a hard breath, then turned to the staff behind him.

“Get her inside. Hold her down.”

His eyes swept over me with cold disgust.

“If she still hasn’t learned her lesson, then I won’t be gentle.”

“Draw her blood. Keep it ready for Greer.”

The moment I saw the long, thick needle in the nurse’s hand, two years of nightmares from the Black Gallery exploded in my head.

I started trembling uncontrollably.

I shook my head with all the strength I had left, my ruined feet scraping uselessly against the floor as I tried to crawl back.

“No… Uncle Thane… please… no…”

Struggling meant nothing.

Several servants pinned me to the cold floor.

The needle pierced my vein, and a scream tore out of me.

Pain and tears blurred my vision. My mouth opened, but no air came in.

Dr. Winslow looked at my bloodless face and the weak flutter of my pulse, then hesitated.

“Mr. Calder, given Miss Marlowe’s condition… I don’t think she can tolerate this volume. We should transfer her to the hospital first.”

Thane frowned.

He glanced toward the sound of crying upstairs, and for one brief second, something in his voice shifted.

“The hospital is too far. Greer can’t wait.”

At that moment, Keaton stumbled down the stairs.

“Sir! It’s bad. Miss Maddox says her chest hurts. She can’t breathe. She says she’s dying.”

Thane’s face changed.

The last trace of hesitation disappeared.

“Keep drawing.”

He forced the order through his teeth. Then he turned without looking back and strode upstairs.

The pain slowly swallowed everything.

Through the haze, I seemed to see Bram standing in sunlight, reaching out to me with a warm smile.

“Bram…”

I stopped fighting.

My family was waiting for me. I was finally going to see him.

The last of my strength drained from my fingertips.

Slowly, I closed my eyes.
