He Begged Me To Stay After I Had Already Left Chapter 03

Chase saw the blood at the corner of my mouth and went rigid.

“You… what’s wrong with you?”

A flash of panic slipped into his voice, though he tried hard to bury it.

Sophie saw it too and let out a startled cry.

“Oh my God, Nina, why are you coughing up blood?”

“Is it because the pregnancy is hitting you too hard?”

That one sentence doused the doubt that had just started to rise in Chase.

His eyes turned cold and disgusted again.

“So now you’re faking illness? Nina, your tricks are getting more pathetic by the day.”

“You think biting your tongue and coughing up a little blood will get you out of apologizing?”

I wiped the blood away with the back of my hand and looked at him.

“Yeah. I’m faking it.”

“So move. You’re in my way.”

His face went livid instantly.

“What did you just say?”

“I said move,” I answered, holding his gaze.

The students gathered around us sucked in sharp breaths.

The old Nina had never even dared raise her voice at Chase.

He stared at me, jaw clenched tight.

“Nina, you really won’t quit until this blows up in your face.”

“We’ll see how long that attitude lasts.”

He yanked Sophie aside and stepped out of my way.

With heavy steps, I walked out of the school building one step at a time.

The sunlight was blinding, but all I felt was cold.

After leaving school, I went straight to the downtown hospital.

This was my last follow-up visit.

Dr. Parker looked at my test results, his brow knotted so tightly it looked painful.

“Nina, the rate of your organ failure has doubled since last week.”

“You need to be admitted immediately. Otherwise…”

He let out a sigh and left the sentence unfinished.

I looked at him calmly.

“Doctor, if I stop treatment now, how many days do I have left?”

He stared at me in shock.

“You’re only eighteen. How can you say something like that?”

“Where are your parents? Call them.”

I shook my head.

“I don’t have parents anymore. Just prescribe me something for the pain.”

Dr. Parker refused outright and insisted on contacting my guardian.

The moment he looked away, I grabbed my medical file and slipped out of the exam room.

I had barely reached the hospital lobby when someone blocked my path.

It was Sophie.

The soft, fragile act she wore at school was gone. In its place was the smile of a winner.

“Nina, so you really are dying.”

I looked at her, unsurprised.

“You followed me?”

She covered her mouth and laughed softly.

“Of course. If I hadn’t followed you, how else would I have found out you were terminally ill?”

“That world-rejection syndrome of yours sounds terrifying.”

I narrowed my eyes.

“You had that fake pregnancy report made through an orderly here, didn’t you?”

She admitted it without hesitation.

“That’s right. The bleached-blond punk’s cousin works here as an orderly. A little money took care of everything.”

“It was your own fault for never leaving Chase alone.”

“I was just helping him see what you really are.”

I looked at her smug face and felt a sudden, deep sadness.

“Sophie, do you really think you won?”

“The only thing you stole was a blind idiot.”

Her expression shifted for a second before she gave a cold snort.

“Keep talking tough.”

“Your reputation is ruined, your parents threw you out, and now you’re dying.”

“And I’m going to become the future Mrs. Cole and take everything that used to be yours.”

“Nina, you lost completely.”

I wasn’t angry. I actually smiled.

“Really? Then you’d better pray he never finds out the truth.”

“Because the second he does, what happens to you will be ten thousand times worse than what happened to me.”

Something in my eyes made her step back.

But she regained her composure quickly.

“He’ll never know. You’re about to die, and once you do, there won’t be any proof left.”

I nodded.

“You’re right. I am about to die.”

“So goodbye, Sophie.”
