He Asked Me To Wait, I Asked For A Divorce Chapter 06

Sloane froze and stared at Denise in disbelief. “Is she telling the truth?

Gavin told me this necklace had been in his family for generations.”

Denise’s eyes darted around the room. She opened her mouth, but nothing coherent came out.

Sloane’s stomach seemed to drop. She ripped the necklace off and flipped the clasp over. The moment her fingers found the faint C.B. engraving, her face went from white to flushed to signly

pale, as if she’d been slapped in front of everyone.

Sloane had always thought highly of herself. She was the daughter of a rear admirál and had grown up getting almost everything’she wanted.

She believed Gavin was a promising young Navy officer, that the pearl necklace he gave her was a treasured family heirloom, proof that he was serious about her.

Instead, the necklace had been stolen-and worse, stolen from his ex-wife.

“Gavin lied to me?” Sloane’s voice shook as she clutched the pearls like they were burning her

palm.

“Lying to you was the easy part.” I spoke evenly. “On the second day of our marriage, he was already planning for what would happen once he got to Diego Garcia. He told me to ‘be reasonable’ if he met someone who could help his career.

Looks like that person was you, Ms. Whitmore.

The sad part is he couldn’t even come up with a decent gift on his own. He had to steal his ex-wife’s grandmother’s necklace to impress you.”

“Shut up!” Sloane snapped, humiliated and furious, her eyes turning red.

In more than twenty years, she had never been embarrassed like this.

She slammed the necklace onto the coffee table and pointed at Denise. “What the hell is going on?

Is this how your family operates?”

With the truth out, Denise dropped onto the floor and started crying. “Sloane, I didn’t have a choice!

Gavin really likes you. He wanted to give you something nice, and we didn’t have anything good enough, so I just-just borrowed Claire’s necklace for a while. We were going to replace it once we had the money.”

“Borrowed it?” I gave a cold laugh. “In my last life, you kept that necklace for more than a decade

and died without ever giving it back.

This time, I guess we’ll see whether the Mercer definition of ‘borrowing’ still means keeping something forever.”

The deputy finished taking notes, placed the necklace in an evidence bag, and looked at Denise. “Mrs. Mercer, there is sufficient reason to investigate you for taking and retaining proper that did not belong to you. You’ll need to come with me and give a full statement.

If the owner chooses to cooperate with charges, there may be legal consequences.”

The second Denise heard that, she panicked. She started crying and refused to move. “I’m not going!

My son is a Navy officer!

You can’t arrest me!

Claire set me up!”

Richard had arrived at some point during the chaos. He pushed through the doorway, took in the

scene, and his face turned black with anger.

He tried to step forward and plead Denise’s case, but the deputy blocked him. Richard could only glare at me. “Claire!

Do you really have to take this all the way?

You and Gavin were married, for God’s sake. Aren’t you worried what people are going to say about you?”

“We were married?” I looked at him. “Where was that concern when you threw my suitcase out and tried to send me away with nothing?

Where was it when Denise took my grandmother’s jewelry?

Where was it when Gavin made up accusations and filed a complaint against me?

Now you’re worried?

Too late.”
