He Asked Me to Pick a Bridesmaid Dress for Their Wedding Chapter 05

A stranger met his eyes. The man looked Ethan over and laughed. “So I heard Holly’s husband cheated on her with that bitch Sierra. You know Sierra’s the one who handed Holly over to me, right?”

Ethan stopped breathing. “What did you say?” He didn’t know how he got the words out. He just

stared at the man, fists clenched and knuckles white. Watching his lips move. Every filthy word

stabbed into Ethan’s ears.

“I wanted Sierra. But she was a coward. Vicious little thing. So she offered up her best friend instead. She’s the one who spiked Holly’s drink. And after I was done? She held Holly and sobbed.

Screamed at me. Called me a monster. Oscar-worthy performance.”

He clapped slow. Each clap slammed into Ethan’s chest. Pain with every beat. Ethan’s jaw locked and his eyes were bloodshot. “Is that true?” The man looked Ethan up and down with pity in

his gaze.

“You’re not too bright. How’d you fall for Sierra’s act? She’s good at pretending. Good at lying. When Holly got pregnant, I was ready to step up. It was mine, after all. But Sierra told me it wasn’t. Said Holly slept around.”

The man snorted. “I believed her. Found out later, Holly’s baby was mine. Sierra lied.” He paused and glanced into the hospital room. Sierra sat frozen in bed, face white and eyes locked on her stepbrother in terror.

“Dwayne! Don’t!” She clutched the blanket and shook her head, begging. Ethan watched her. Rage and humiliation. But more than that, he needed the truth. He turned on the man. “Why did she

lie?”

Dwayne Briggs shrugged. “My dear sister doesn’t want me to say. Mr. Cole, sometimes it’s better to stay clueless. You can’t handle the truth.”

Ethan grabbed him by the collar and slammed him against the wall. “Tell me.”

Dwayne’s eyes weren’t scared. They were manic. “Tell you what?” He dug into his pocket and pulled out a folded document. He shoved it in Ethan’s face. Marriage certificate. County seal

stamped across the bottom. Sierra’s name. His name.

He grinned. “Here’s why. Sierra’s sick. Twisted. Has a thing. She doesn’t love anyone. She just loves fucking the men her best friend has touched. For ten years, I was the only one who’d been

with Holly. So when I got out, Sierra asked me to marry her.”

“We weren’t married long before she ran. I looked for her and found her chasing you.”

Ethan’s face crumbled and Dwayne’s smile widened. “I didn’t get it at first. I followed her and watched. She genuinely cares about Holly. Loves her like a sister. But she’s warped. Gets off on sleeping with her best friend’s man.”

Ethan let go and his face was bone-white. His ears rang and his vision tunneled. He forced himself to breathe and looked at the man. “So you never dated Holly. You both set her up and destroyed her.” Dwayne raised an eyebrow. “Correct.”

Ethan swayed and the world tilted. But more than shock, fear. He stumbled forward. “Holly. I have to find Holly.” A hand caught his shirt.
