My mother shot to her feet first. 

“That’s impossible. Absolutely impossible.” 

“Look. Ruby’s in Cabo on vacation. She posted on Instagram not long ago. How could she possibly be dead?” 

My father jumped in too. “You’ve made a mistake. Ruby’s always making one life–or–death scene after another, but she’d never actually go through with it.” 

Nathan staggered unexpectedly, one hand braced hard against the back of a chair just to stay upright. 

He looked dazed. It took people calling his name several times before he finally came back to himself. 

“Which property?” 

“Silvercrest Estate.” 

All the color drained from Nathan’s face. 

He turned stiffly and looked at Blaire, whose face had twisted into something grotesque and vicious. 

Then he grabbed her by the arm and yanked her in 

front of him. 

“I let you stay there temporarily. What did you do?”
