He Arrested My Father at Our Wedding Chapter 04

“Your father isn’t doing well.”

When Olivia opened the door and came in, she was holding a takeout box, and that same smile was still on her face.

“What do you mean, not doing well?”

“His blood pressure is high, and there may be some heart issues too. He’s an older man. When emotions run that high, things can go wrong easily.”

It was already two in the morning. I had been sitting in the interrogation room for nine full hours, and the fluorescent lights had washed my wedding gown so pale it looked as if all the life had bled out of it.

“I want to see my father.”

“Procedure doesn’t allow that.”

“He has high blood pressure. He takes two medications every day, one white tablet and one yellow tablet. The white round one has to be taken thirty minutes before meals.”

“Telling me won’t help you. Tell your husband.”

She deliberately emphasized the word “husband.”

“Bring Logan here.”

“Detective Reed is busy.” Olivia pushed the takeout box toward me. “Eat something first.”

“I’m not eating. Bring him here.”

She sighed, took out her phone, and made a call.

Five minutes later, the door opened.

Logan stood in the doorway. He had changed into a black hoodie, looking nothing like the man in the tailored wedding suit earlier that day. His eyes were bloodshot, but his face still showed nothing.

“Medical staff have been assigned to monitor your father.”

“I want to see him.”

“Not right now.”

“Logan, he’s sixty-three. He has high blood pressure and diabetes. His body can’t take being put through this.”

I stood up. My knees nearly gave out from sitting too long, and I steadied myself against the corner of the table.

“What exactly are you trying to investigate? I can tell you where the money came from. Let him go.”

“You said the seven million dollars was yours.” He looked at me, his tone as flat as if he were reading from an official report. “How does your income support that claim? I know exactly where you work.”

Of course he did.

He knew my job, my bank records, my phone contacts, and what time I left home and came back every day. Not because I had told him, but because he had investigated me.

“Then you should have noticed something didn’t add up.” I looked at him. “You investigated me for this long, and you never thought some of the pieces didn’t fit?”

He did not answer.

“Logan.” I took a step forward until less than three feet separated us. “I’m going to ask you one question, and you’re going to answer me.”

He did not move.

“Did the case come first, or did we?”

The light carved a shadow along the side of his face. His Adam’s apple shifted once.

“The case came first.”

Those few words were colder than the sharp click of the handcuffs closing.

I stepped back, and my back hit the wall.

The case came first.

Nineteen months ago, on that rainy day at the coffee shop on the corner, his umbrella had broken. I had thought fate had brought him to me.

It had been fate, but not the kind that brought me a lover.

It had brought me an investigator.

“Fine.” My voice sounded strangely calm, as if it belonged to someone else. “I understand now.”

“Sienna.”

“Is there anything else you want to ask? Ask it all while you still can.”

Sudden footsteps and panicked shouting erupted outside the door.

“Mr. Nolan collapsed! Call EMS!”

“Someone get in here!”

“Dad!”

I rushed toward the door, but Logan caught me around the waist and held me back.

“Let go of me! That’s my father!”

The door across the hall slammed open. Two people had my father under the arms as they rushed him toward the end of the corridor. His face was ashen, his head lolled to one side, and both of his hands hung limp. The front of his seafood-chowder-stained suit jacket had fallen open.

“Dad!”

I struggled with everything I had. My elbow slammed into Logan’s chest, and he gave a muffled grunt, but he did not let go.

“Sienna, calm down.”

“You want me to calm down? You arrested him, and now you want me to calm down?”

The door at the end of the hallway closed.

I could not see him anymore.

All the strength went out of my legs, and I slid down the wall.

The skirt of my wedding gown spread across the cold floor of the interrogation room, wrinkled into a heap.

I did not know how much time passed. It might have been five minutes, or it might have been half an hour.

Olivia crouched in front of me and held out a tissue.

“Sienna, your father has been taken to the hospital. His life is not in immediate danger.”

I did not take it.

She stayed there, crouched in front of me, waiting in silence.

“Sienna, I’m going to say something you probably don’t want to hear. The sooner you cooperate, the sooner your father can be released from this. If you stall, he stays stuck in it with you. You saw the condition he’s in.”

I slowly lifted my head and looked at that face that never seemed to stop smiling.

My swollen eyes, the dust smeared across my wedding gown, and the loose strands of hair falling around my scattered pearl pins must have made me look pathetic.

But suddenly, I did not want to cry anymore.

“Fine. But I need to make a phone call.”

Olivia raised her brows slightly.

“Sienna, right now—”

“Bring me my phone. One call. Ten minutes. After that, I’ll tell you whatever you want to know.”

She looked at me.

“Who are you calling?”

I met her eyes and said, “You’ll know after I make the call.”
