Guiding Light to Rebirth Chapter 13

Guiding Light to Rebirth Chapter 13

Back in the country, Ethan didn’t go home.

Instead, he headed straight to the chapel on Mount Hope, where he’d fallen off the cliff.

He bowed deeply to the priest. “If I trade the rest of my life for a chance in the next one, is that possible?”

The priest gazed at him with compassionate eyes, his voice serene. “Sir, cause begets effect, and effect begets cause. You seek the next life, but how do you know this one isn’t what you begged for in the last?”

Ethan didn’t grasp the depth at first until an ordinary night.

Scrolling, he stumbled on Debbie’s new video on social media. His eyes lingered tenderly. Then overwhelming drowsiness hit.

In a daze, like an observer, he saw a completely different life.

In that world, his parents dragged him back home. He regained his memory and married Debbie.

Soon after the wedding, Debbie got diagnosed with ALS. But unlike now, she didn’t see it as a burden. She smiled and said they’d face it together.

He told her, “We love each other enough not to back down from hardship. No matter the hardships ahead, I’ll go through them with you.”

The words were affectionate, but now his heart was ashes.

After Hanna’s death, his kindness to Debbie had been just duty.

He carried her on his back to the chapel, knelt among the burning candles for an entire day and night, and prayed for a miracle.

But no one knew that he’d secretly written his prayers again and again for Hanna.

He hoped she wouldn’t die for him next time and prayed for a different ending.

After Debbie passed, he burned all the prayers.

In the blazing fire, an ethereal, authoritative voice rang out. “As you wish.”

The scene shifted.

Debbie, reborn, halted her team’s plan to find doctors to awaken his memories.

“Whoa!” Ethan gasped awake, bolting up.

Darkness enveloped him. His limbs tingled like ants had gnawed them. A soul-deep shiver lingered.

His heart pounded wildly in his chest, each beat deafening.

He touched his chest numbly. It had gone beyond pain to numbness.

He tried to smile, but it froze. His eyes welled up. “So, this is what I asked for.”

He’d been blind, unable to see his true heart. He had been trapped in love’s illusions.

All the bitter fruits were his own doing.

The next morning, Ethan found the priest again. “I want to stay here praying for someone my whole life.”

The priest nodded. “Okay.”

For the rest of his days, amid candlelight and ancient statues, he’d pray for Debbie forever.
