Guiding Light to Rebirth Chapter 10

The name echoed in Ethan’s mind. It carried a dull familiarity.

A slender figure suddenly surfaced in his memories.

The girl stood amid a yard full of lilies, smiling at him. “Ethan, the butterfly orchids in the greenhouse are blooming. Let’s go check them out together.”

He watched himself hurry over eagerly. But as he touched her, she shattered into countless butterflies and flew away.

Her sad, ethereal sigh lingered in the air. “Ethan, we have no future.”

In the hospital room, Ethan’s eyes snapped open.

His cry shattered the silence. “Debbie!”

“Ethan! You’re awake!” Hanna’s face lit up with joy, then crumpled. “Thank God. If you didn’t wake up, I wouldn’t know what to do. Your folks would hate my guts, and I’d feel guilty forever. I never should’ve asked you to get the rosary beads for me. It’s all my fault.”

Ethan listened quietly. His gaze fixed on the woman he’d treasured during his amnesia.

He rasped, “Where is Debbie?”

Hanna froze, then bit her lip. She wasn’t giving up on badmouthing Debbie. “You’re still asking about her? You’ve been here forever, and she hasn’t shown up once. That kind of woman clings when you’re on top but bails when things go south. Why bother?”

“She is not like that.” Ethan frowned, cutting her off.

His eyes held unshakable certainty. He knew me better than anyone.

He added, “If she’s not visiting, she’s just mad.”

He remembered what he’d done to me during his amnesia, and his heart clenched like it was in a vise. He could barely breathe.

Panic rising, he threw off the covers and strode toward the door.

Hanna hugged him desperately from behind. Even if she was slow, she saw the clarity in his eyes. He remembered.

It was always like this.

Once I appeared, no one else existed for him.

She wasn’t okay with it. Choking back tears, she played humble. “I’m sorry. I misjudged Miss Whittaker. Maybe she had reasons for tossing my engagement ring. And the kidnapping at the engagement party wasn’t her setup. But you’re badly injured. Wait till you’re better, and I’ll go apologize with you, okay?”

Ethan caught her ploy to backpedal and advance. He pried her fingers off one by one, his voice ice-cold. “The kidnappers at the engagement party? Debbie didn’t hire them. If she wanted to hurt you, she wouldn’t have saved you when you both got thrown into the sea. She sank because she exhausted herself rescuing you.”

He closed his eyes, impatience creeping in. “I won’t dig into how you found me during my amnesia.”

Hanna’s composure shattered inch by inch. “What are you talking about?”

Ethan glared at her, shook off her hand, and strode out.

Hanna shrieked after him. “You’re going to her? What about me?”

The words pierced his ears, but Ethan didn’t turn back.

An indescribable panic flooded his heart. He’d asked himself the same question during his amnesia, “If Debbie were my old love, what does my falling for Hanna mean to her?”
