Word spread through the hospital that Ethan flew in some top shrinks worldwide to check Hanna for any trauma from the water.

After her checkup, Hanna cooed that she wanted to share a lemon with Ethan.

His voice was helpless and pleading. “Sharing a lemon brings bad luck. I don’t wanna be apart from you.”

Right then, a random memory popped up in his head.

It was a sunny day. A breeze jingled wind chimes at the window, carrying a wisteria scent.

A girl bit the lemon he offered, loving it. Then she shoved the rest into his mouth.

He freaked out, realizing what he had eaten. “Sharing a lemon brings bad luck. I don’t wanna be apart from you.”

The girl gaped at his drama, but her face blurred like fog.

“Are you that scared of us breaking up?”

“Hell yeah, and I’ll never give you the chance to leave.”

Ethan clutched his chest, his heart pounding from the flashback.

He treasured that girl obsessively. Letting her go would drown his life in endless rain.

Panic hit him, and he wondered who it was. ‘Debbie?’

A wave of familiar irritation surged, worse than ever. Something vital seemed to be slipping away.

He thought of the engagement kidnapping.

When he saw me and Hanna dumped in the sea, his heart clenched. He jumped in without thinking.

He saw me drag Hanna up, push her to a piece of driftwood, and sink into the ocean.

Logic said save Hanna, his fiancée. It was the right call.

Debbie had backup. They’d save her, and she’d live.

But as he neared Hanna, instinct yanked him toward the deep blue.

“This isn’t right,” he told himself.

They were childhood friends. His parents and I said that he had always seen me as a sister, so by right, I shouldn’t matter this much.

But if the one in his memory was me. What was I to him?

He stood up abruptly, the chair scraping against the floor.

Hanna blinked, confused.

He pressed his lips together. “I’m checking on Debbie.”

He started to leave, but she tugged at his sleeve.

He looked down and saw tears in her eyes. “Are you ditching me for her?”

He didn’t get her desperation, but he softened. “Don’t worry. I’m just going to confirm something.”

She wondered if he had remembered anything. If he went to see Debbie, he might not treat her like this again.

She frowned, her voice trembling. “My head’s killing me.”
