Goodbye, Mr. Marchetti Chapter 04

Goodbye, Mr. Marchetti Chapter 04

After I threw Vittorio out, he didn’t stop.

He showed up at my office.

My boss was visibly nervous. Vittorio Marchetti wasn’t a name you could ignore.

But Vittorio just smiled and walked straight to my desk.

“I’m in town on business,” he said. “What time do you get off? I’ll wait.”

My coworkers were all watching.

I kept my eyes on my files. “I take the train.”

It didn’t matter. He stayed anyway.

Later, in the break room, someone asked what our relationship was.

I poured myself a coffee and said, “We’re married.”

Before they could react, I added: “But I’m not his wife.”

That was all. Everyone understood.

I turned around. Vittorio was standing right behind me, expression unreadable.

On the drive back, he kept glancing at me in the rearview mirror.

I looked out the window and said nothing.

I hadn’t said anything wrong.

When a man’s heart changes, it doesn’t change back.

If it seems like it might, that’s only because he hasn’t found anything better yet.

After he left, I couldn’t accept it.

I couldn’t accept that he didn’t love me anymore.

I went home and destroyed everything. The wedding photos. Everything with his name on it. I sent him pictures of the wreckage.

He came over and brought Sienna with him.

“You can have the penthouse,” he said. “The best of everything. I’ll make sure she stays out of your sight.”

Sienna sat across from me with tears in her eyes.

“I’m sorry,” she said. “I couldn’t help it. I’m so sorry.”

This was the fifth year of our marriage.

I screamed. I begged. I threatened.

None of it mattered.

He moved out. Moved in with her.

I stayed alone in that apartment night after night, sending messages that never got answered.

Silence is what kills you.

Eventually I gave up. I decided to let him go.

I took the divorce papers to his office.

He refused to sign.

“I won’t divorce you,” he said. “A stable marriage keeps the Don comfortable.”

“You can see other people. I won’t interfere.”

But I wasn’t like him. I couldn’t do that.

I couldn’t move forward. I couldn’t go back.

The pain went all the way down to the bone.

One night I saw a knife on the kitchen counter.

I woke up in the hospital.

Sienna was sitting by my bed.

“I know you’re in pain,” she said. “But this isn’t the answer. If you do this, you hurt him too.”

She wasn’t scared anymore. She looked proud of herself.

I slapped her across the face. Then I threw everything I could reach at her.

Vittorio stepped between us.

“Look at yourself,” he said. “You’re acting insane.”

The two of them stood there together, and something in me cracked open completely.

Then they both said I was crazy.

I decided to ruin him.

I hired people to dig up everything. Every woman. Every lie.

I collected it all. Photos. Hotel receipts. Testimony.

I was going to send it to everyone.

Then Vittorio came home.

My mother called right after.

She was crying. Someone had set up Enzo. Made it look like he owed a debt. One million dollars.

“They said he either pays or goes to prison,” she sobbed. “Vittorio, you’re a lawyer. Can’t you do something?”

“He’s your brother-in-law. Please. If he goes to prison, I don’t know what we’ll do.”
