Dorian looked like he’d been gutted. He just knelt there, frozen.

He opened his mouth, but no words came out.

Evander’s hand tightened on my shoulder.

He looked down at Dorian, his tone frigid.

“Mr. Lombardi, the IRS has already been through your books.”

“Tomorrow, the court will issue an order to freeze all assets registered in your name.”

“That includes the apartment you bought for Ms. S.”

Dorian’s body went limp, and he collapsed into the muddy puddle at his knees.

Just then, a taxi screeched to a halt nearby.

Mrs. Lombardi, leaning heavily on a caregiver, scrambled out of the car and rushed toward us.

Her face was sallow, and she had lost a shocking amount of weight.

She looked nothing like the imperious woman from the wedding.

“Hannah! Hannah!”

She threw herself against the iron gate, tears streaming down her face.

“I was wrong! I trusted the wrong person!”

“You and Dorian have years of history between you. You can’t just stand by and watch him go to prison!”

As she spoke, her knees buckled, as if she were about to kneel.

I took a sharp step back.

I would not let her.

“Mrs. Lombardi.”

I corrected her, my voice cold.

“You had a very different attitude when you were forcing me to toast Chloe.”

“The Lombardi family is too rich for my blood. I can’t afford the price of admission.”

I turned to the butler.

“Please have them removed from the gate.”

The butler immediately signaled for security.

Several guards moved forward and began pulling Dorian and Mrs. Lombardi away from the entrance.

Through the rain, Dorian was still screaming my name.

His voice grew fainter and fainter.

I turned my back on the scene and walked toward the house.

Evander tilted the umbrella, shielding me from every last drop of rain.

“From now on, Mrs. Hawthorne, people like that aren’t worth your time.”
