From Broken Vow To True Love Chapter 11

I walked out of the ballroom.

The afternoon sun was bright, and as it hit my face, I took my first easy breath in years.

Evander’s driver was already waiting at the entrance.

A black Rolls-Royce Phantom was parked at the bottom of the steps.

Evander opened the car door for me himself, his other hand held protectively over the frame.

“Watch your head.”

I slid into the plush leather seat.

He got in from the other side.

The heavy door clicked shut, sealing out the noise and chaos.

The air inside smelled of rich leather and cedar.

Evander loosened his tie, his gaze settling on my face.

“Were you frightened back there?”

His tone was different from the one he’d used in the ballroom, the icy edge gone.

I shook my head.

“Thank you, Mr. Hawthorne.”

“If it wasn’t for you, I don’t know how I would have gotten out of there today.”

I knew what a desperate gamble I had taken when I’d reached for him.

He could have ignored me completely.

But he hadn’t just saved me; he had systematically dismantled the man who had tried to humiliate me.

Evander gave a soft laugh and poured me a glass of ice water from the car’s mini-fridge.

“Is that all the thanks I get?”

He leaned a little closer.

“Mrs. Hawthorne, I just acknowledged you in front of half of New York.”

“How do you plan to repay me?”

I gripped the cold glass, my fingers tightening.

Of course.

He was a businessman.

And businessmen never did anything for free.

“What do you want, Mr. Hawthorne?”

I looked up at him.

“If it’s in my power to give.”
