“Elena, you know the whole vow thing is just an old custom!”

His voice broke at the end.

“Why him? Why did it have to be someone else?”

I looked at him, and for a moment, everything blurred at the edges.

Four years ago, the first time I ever saw him, he’d been standing in the snow just like this.

He’d smiled and told me he’d marry me once the documentary wrapped.

That was four years ago.

I took a breath.

“Garrett.”

“Even if the vow is just an old custom.”

“That’s not why I’m done with you.”

Garrett went rigid.

“I waited four years for you.”

“Not four days. Four years.”

“The first time you broke a promise, I forgave you.”

“The second time, I forgave you again.”

“And then it became a habit.”

“Every single time, I waited.”

“Waiting for you to come back and marry me. Waiting for you to stand up for me and tell them I wasn’t a joke.”

The wind cut between us.

Garrett’s face lost more color with every word.

“But you didn’t.”

“You watched them laugh at me.”

“You watched Audrey hack off my hair.”

“Ruin my wedding dress.”

Garrett’s lips moved.

I cut him off, quiet.

“Father Silas always said that if two people are meant to be, the Lord will bring them together.”

“And if they aren’t, nothing can force it.”

He reached for my hand.

“I’ll marry you right now.”

“We’ll leave tomorrow.”

“Forget the documentary.”

“Forget the investment.”

“I’ll never put you second to her again.”

“I don’t care what Audrey thinks.”

“Come with me.”

“Right now. We’ll leave right now.”

I was about to step back.

Then I saw someone standing behind him.

Audrey. I had no idea how long she’d been standing there.

She stood at the far edge of the snow, red-eyed and pale as a ghost.

She’d heard everything.

Every word. Including this.

“I was only nice to her for the money.”

Audrey swayed on her feet. Tears spilled down her cheeks.

She looked at Garrett like she was seeing him for the first time.

Then she pressed a hand over her mouth, turned, and ran.

I called out before I could stop myself. “Audrey!”

She was already gone.
