Forty-Eight Hours Until I Disappear From His Life Chapter 07

Back then, I’d already packed my bags.

But Ethan had only said one thing.

“If you leave, don’t expect me to wait for you.”

The next day, I went to the office and withdrew my application.

And all this time, he’d believed I refused overseas assignments because I couldn’t bear to give up

the life he provided.

Ethan slammed the two applications onto the table.

“Did any of you know about this?”

No one spoke.

Someone lifted his drink and pretended not to hear.

Sloane barely glanced at the papers.

“She gave them up herself. No one forced her. What, are you going to blame yourself for that now tgo?”

“You don’t know why she gave them up?”

“How would I know? She never told me.”

Ethan stared at her.

“The day of her first assignment, who called her and told her I had a stomach bleed?”

Sloane’s expression shifted slightly.

“I did. You were in the hospital.”

“You’d just had too much to drink and gotten your stomach pumped. The doctor said you could go home that day.”

“So what? She was your girlfriend. Wasn’t she supposed to come back and take care of you?”

Ethan braced a hand against the edge of the table, his knuckles turning white.

“The second time, who told me she applied for an overseas assignment because she was trying to

accure me into buying her a place?”

“I was just giving you my read on it.”

“Every single time, you were just giving me your read?”

No one in the room dared move.

Ethan looked at the rest of his friends.

“When she walked out of her PE exam and rushed to the hospital, you laughed and said she was scared something had happened to her meal ticket. When her mother was hospitalized, you lied to get her back here again. She gave up two promotions, and you said it was because she couldn’t walk away from Whitmore money.”

His voice dropped lower with every word.

“What did she ever take from me?”

Still, no one answered.

Ethan pointed at someone at random.

“You. Answer me.”

The man avoided his eyes.

“I mean… she didn’t really take anything.”

“The car?”

“She wouldn’t take it.”

“The condo?”

“She wouldn’t take that either.”

“Cards, jewelry, handbags. Which one did she take?”

His voice dropped with every answer.

“None of them.”

Ethan turned to Sloane.

“So what exactly did she scam out of me?”

Sloane froze for several seconds, then suddenly laughed.

“Ma foolings. She kept you hooked for three years because she wanted to become Mrs. Whitmore.

Now she knows marriage isn’t happening, so she’s walking away to make a point.”

“The engagement party was already booked.”

“Then she decided you weren’t giving her enough.”

“She paid the wedding planner’s deposit herself.”

Sloane had no answer for that.

Someone nearby muttered under his breath.

“Didn’t Sloane say she’d apologize in front of everyone if Claire actually left?”

Sloane whipped around.

“Shut up. This has nothing to do with you.”

The man’s face tightened.

“You’re the one who said it.”

Sloane grabbed her bag.

“Fine. So now this is all my fault? Don’t act like I was the only one laughing back then.”

She was almost at the door when Ethan suddenly stopped her.

“When did you find out how much that watch cost?”

“How would I know?”

“Then why were you at the boutique after she left?”

Sloane stopped in her tracks.

Ethan pulled out his phone.

The store manager had just sent him the security footage.

In the video, after I walked away from the counter, Sloane approached the sales associate and asked three questions.

How much the watch cost.

Whether it had been engraved.

Whether the buyer had been saving for it for a long time.

The sales associate told her I’d been in several times, putting down another payment after

paycheck.

Sloane had known all of it.

every.

But on Ethan’s birthday, she’d still told everyone I spent $8,000 because I expected a sports car in

return.

Ethan held the phone up in front of her face.

“Still want to say you didn’t know?”

Every trace of color drained from Sloane’s face.

Just then, Ethan’s phone rang.

It was an unknown number.

He answered almost instantly.

My voice came through the phone.

“Mr. Whitmore, I heard you’ve been contacting Daniel Reed.”

I paused.

“What exactly do you still want from me?”
