That night, I don’t know how I got home.

When the taxi stopped outside the Hartwell estate, it started to rain.

When my feet touched the ground, my knees almost gave out.

Declan’s words were still spinning in my head.

He had someone he liked.

And what had I done to him?

I’d locked him up for three days, stripped off his clothes, and kissed him.

My cheeks burned hot, like I’d been slapped in the face.

In his eyes, I probably was a clown.

A ridiculous, disgusting, freakish madwoman.

The Hartwell estate was lit up. Orange light spilled from the floor-to-ceiling windows, warm and bright.

I stood quietly at the bottom of the steps for a while.

At least… I still had a home.

Even though I wasn’t the biological daughter, Mom and Dad hadn’t kicked me out.

Mom had even messaged me that night, calling me “baby,” telling me to take care of myself and not get too

tired.

I took a deep breath and pushed open the door.

Voices came from the dining room. I instinctively softened my steps.

Light spilled from the dining room, casting a long shadow.

Dad’s voice was tired. “Like I said, we shouldn’t have taken Romy in as our daughter from the very beginning.”

Crack.

Thunder rumbled outside the window.

The rain was getting heavier.

I froze in place.

My back pressed against the hallway wall. My heart hurt like a knife had been driven into it, twisting over and

over.

Mom was silent for a moment.

“Back when we found out the truth, we should have clarified the relationship sooner.”

“Now, it’s only worse for everyone.”

“At tomorrow’s ball, let’s just lay it all out for her.”

The dining room was quiet for a few seconds.

The sound of a teacup being set on a tray rang out, crisp and clear.

Dad’s voice rose again.

“Okay. In front of the whole family, we’ll make it clear to her.”

“And then we’ll explain their situation too…”

I turned around and slowly walked back to my room.

On the stairs, I stumbled and almost fell.

Back in my room, I closed the door.

My back against the door, I slowly slid down and crouched on the floor.

Tears finally fell. I bit my lip hard, but I couldn’t hold them back.

Declan didn’t want me. Mom and Dad didn’t want me either.

No one wanted me.

The world was vast. Where could I go?

I cried until my voice went hoarse.

Only one thought remained in my mind-

Since they were going to lay it all out in front of everyone tomorrow, I might as well leave first.

At least this way…

I could keep the last shred of my dignity.
