Dim yellow light spilled down.

Declan sat quietly in the room.

His expression was cold and unreadable, carrying the calm confidence he had built through years of dangerous work.

He lifted his eyes and looked at me.

“Romy, you’ve really lost your mind.”

He was always like this.

Sharp.

Powerful.

The kind of person who never let anyone see through him.

I pressed my lips together and gave him a guilty smile.

“With you here, how would I dare?”

The day after Declan learned that Sloane was the Hartwells’ biological daughter and I wasn’t, he’d flown back from London.

Then, the moment he landed, I convinced him to come here.

He hadn’t even brought luggage.

The first day he arrived, he was still wearing the tailored suit he’d worn on the plane.

The second day, I helped him change into something more comfortable.

Declan was too big, his build solid. He was a whole size larger than me.

I really couldn’t find anything in my closet that would fit him.

These past two days, I’d been moving things into the villa bit by bit, like an ant.

I set down my backpack and took out each item one by one.

Two boxes of blueberries.

A bunch of bananas.

Three bottles of whole milk.

Two loaves of bread.

Two sets of spare loungewear.

A few things I had secretly prepared for him.

When Declan saw the pile of things, his expression darkened slightly.

“What did you prepare all this for?”

I lifted my lashes and stole a glance at him.

“I just wanted to take care of you.”

The room was silent for a few seconds.

Declan let out a helpless sigh.

“I’m your brother.”

I puffed out my cheeks.

“But we’re not related by crimson.”

His jaw tightened.

“Romy, I think you’ve really lost your mind.”

“I watched you grow up. How could you let your emotions lead you this far?”

I gave a helpless smile and shook my head.

“Declan, I guess you don’t know me as well as you think.”

I had been hiding my feelings for him for years.

And I had been reckless enough to risk everything just to keep him from walking away before I could tell him the truth.

I walked closer and sat beside him.

“Declan, I like you.”

The words I had buried for so long finally came out.

“I know everything is complicated.”

“But after Sloane came back, you were the only person I was afraid of losing.”

Declan looked at me for a long time.

Then he lowered his eyes.

“Romy.”

“I think you’re confusing fear and dependence with what you truly want.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“I know what I feel.”

The room became quiet again.

For the first time, Declan didn’t look angry.

He looked sad.
