His spine went rigid for a moment, then he looked up at me in disbelief.

“What did you just say?”

I looked him straight in the eye.

“I said I reported your month-long absence to Caldwell University because I wanted you expelled.”

“You know me, Alex. I don’t let things go. I don’t tolerate betrayal.”

“Savannah came after me again and again. I slapped her myself, and I made sure everyone in Caldwell knows she was the other woman.”

“Her name is still trending number one on the campus message board, right?”

“People who betray sincere love deserve consequences.”

“So is it really that strange that I wanted revenge?”

“That I wanted to make sure you couldn’t keep moving forward with your life?”

“Then again, you got a low score on purpose just to stay with Savannah. I guess your future never meant that much to you anyway.”

“And don’t worry—Savannah got expelled right along with you. You’re not alone.”

He started laughing and crying. The sounds mixed together into something almost frightening.

Then he grabbed my wrist, hard.

“As long as you can get it out of your system, I don’t care. I can give up my future.”

I struggled, but I couldn’t break free.

The noise brought Grant out of the apartment. Without hesitation, he kicked Alex away.

“Alex, you’re a real piece of work.” His voice was ice cold.

“Four years ago, you were right there. You stood there and watched Clara get hurt.”

“And now you think one little apology is supposed to wash away all your sins? Dream on!”

Just then, the elevator doors slid open.

My mom rushed out, her face filled with rage.

“What you just said—is it true?”

“Four years ago, when Clara was cornered in that alley, Alex was there?”

Grant hesitated for a moment, then nodded.

“My father passed away that day. I left school early because I wanted to get home before…”

“To get home faster, I took the route through the school’s back gate.”

“Alex was already standing at the entrance of the alley.”

“As I walked past, I heard a scream from inside—and that’s when he rushed in.”

“I had to get home to see my dad one last time, so I called the police and left.”
