At the time, Grant was helping me flush chili oil out of my eye with a damp cloth.

He was leaning in close, so it probably looked a little intimate.

Grant never saw the punch coming and took it square in the face.

The second Grant recovered, he hit him right back. Alex stumbled back a few steps.

I forced my burning eyes open.

Half of Grant’s face was already bruising, and blood traced the corner of his mouth.

“Are you okay? Let me take you to the hospital.”

Alex grabbed my wrist and repeated, his voice rising.

“So this is why you dumped me? Because of him?”

“Clara, answer me!”

The shout turned every head in the restaurant. People eating there were all staring now.

Grant wiped the blood from his lip and let out a cold laugh.

“You’ve been broken up for over a month. Don’t you think you’re a little too concerned about who your ex is having dinner with?”

Alex shot him a glare.

“I never agreed to the breakup. She’s still my girlfriend.”

Grant scoffed. “Since when does a breakup require both people to agree?”

“Clara said it was over. What, you don’t understand plain English?”

“Or do you think you’re so special she needs government approval before leaving you?”

Alex’s face darkened. Not a single word came out.

I was so embarrassed I couldn’t even be bothered to acknowledge him.

But he refused to let it go.

“You sent one breakup text and then just vanished. Do you have any idea how long I’ve been looking for you?”

“A whole month! I risked getting kicked out of my school searching for you.”

“Clara, you tell me—have you been fair to me?”

Then he turned toward Grant. “And you.”

“Clara and I have been together since we were kids.”

“Who the hell are you to stick yourself in the middle and play homewrecker?”

His words were so vile I frowned in disgust.

Alex stepped closer.

“Clara, if you tell me right now that there’s nothing between you and him, I’ll let this past month go.”

His expression never wavered.

He was so sure I’d lower my head and apologize first, just like I always had.

What I hadn’t realized was how good Alex was at twisting the story until he became the victim.

I laughed so hard I cried. Everything I’d been holding in for the past month finally broke loose.

“Grant and I are just friends. I didn’t break up with you because of him.”

I looked straight at him.

“Alex, stop playing victim.”

“Do you think I’m stupid, or were you just that confident your lies would hold forever?”

“You actually thought you could hide your affair with Savannah from me forever?”
