Five Years of Secret Love, He Married My Best Friend Chapter 17

I woke the next morning.

Connor’s mom Susan stood in our kitchen. Voice carrying. Complaining to my mom about Connor’s sudden meltdown. Wanting to annul the marriage.

My mom sipped her coffee. Face blank.

Susan finally ran out of steam. My mom’s response was ice.

“Divorce might be good. Save some other girl from that boy’s destruction down the line.”

Susan’s face crumpled. Confusion.

She had no idea what my mom’s knife-edged words meant.

My mom didn’t bother explaining. Showed her out.

But Connor wasn’t done.

Susan had just stepped off our yard. Heading toward her front door.

A crack rang out in the early morning air.

Connor’s father. Roaring.

“Have you completely lost your mind?! You exchanged rings with Maddie before the priest yesterday. Today you’re telling me you want an annulment?! You love Harper from across the street?! What do you think marriage is?! What do you think our families’ reputations are?!”

Two clear handprints marked Connor’s face.

He spilled everything. The insane scheme. Fake marriage. Insurance fraud.

Then he screamed. Hysterical.

“The one I’ve truly loved is Harper! She’s the one I want to spend my life with! I—”

“Connor.”

I pushed open my door. Stood on the steps. Cut his confession cold.

“I already have a boyfriend.”

He turned. Looked at me. He let out a strange, unhinged laugh.

“So what if you have a boyfriend? Marriages break. You’ve known him a few days.”

“Harper, I don’t believe you can erase five years in Chicago. Just like that.”

Susan processed her son’s words. Her hand flew to her mouth.

“Harper. You and Connor. You lived together?”

Connor’s eyes glittered with triumph.

He knew me too well. He was certain my pride wouldn’t let me lie. Not now.

I looked at his smug certainty.

“Never.”

“We were never together.”

The smile on his face froze. Panic finally bled into his eyes.
