Five Years of Secret Love, He Married My Best Friend Chapter 11

Five Years of Secret Love, He Married My Best Friend Chapter 11

He’d lost it. Completely. Grip brutal. No restraint.

Pain shot up my wrist. I sucked in a sharp breath.

But I didn’t flinch.

“What happens between me and him. It’s none of your business.”

“None of my business?”

He laughed. Angry and unhinged. Possessiveness blazing in his eyes.

“Harper, did you hit your head? Forgotten what we are?”

I laughed too. At his arrogance. His absurdity.

“Acquaintances.”

The word landed. A muscle in Connor’s face twitched. His expression turned ugly.

“That’s all.”

I added it without mercy.

Those three words hit like a mallet. His grip tightened another notch.

“Acquaintances. That’s all. Harper, you think those five years living together in Chicago was playing house?!”

I wrenched my hand back. Broke his grip. Stepped away in disgust.

“When did we live together? When were we ever in a relationship?”

I stared at that hypocritical face. Every word precise.

“Connor, your legal wife is Maddie. Tonight. It’s your wedding night with her.”

“Harper!”

I’d hit the nerve. Every ounce of his trademark composure shattered.

“How many times do I have to explain?! I only married her so she could use my PPO to save her father’s life! There’s nothing between us except a piece of paper!”

“Really? Then why were you playing devoted boyfriend at her house? Letting the whole community see how in love you are?”

“Connor. Five years together in Chicago. How many times did I beg you to come home with me for Thanksgiving? Did you say yes even once?!”

I hadn’t planned to rip open these old wounds today. Turn myself into some hysterical wreck.

But he kept pushing.

“You told me you were flying to Silicon Valley. Business. Instead, you came straight home with Maddie. When you sat at her dinner table playing son-in-law, did I cross your mind for one second? Your actual girlfriend?”

“Maddie’s introverted. Her dad’s critically ill. Her relatives love to pick at her. She needed someone to pose as her boyfriend and shut them up. I’m the only guy she trusts. Was I supposed to just let her drown?!”

I’d cornered him. Now he clung to that all-American heroism defense.
