The girl wailed.

I hung up. Silenced the phone. Tossed it in a drawer.

A restless, suffocating feeling churned in my chest.

And a faint, lingering hurt.

Evening came. Almost time to go live. I finally checked my phone again.

Ryan had texted.

[Babe, why don’t you quit being a host.]

[I’ll take care of you. Let’s get married. I’ll give you all my bank cards, okay? I’ll find the best doctor. I can fix your ear.]

Then his real goal surfaced.

[Haddie accidentally hurt you. I’ll make sure she faces consequences.]
