Fiancé?Sorry, My Memory Was Wiped Chapter 02

Before I even finished speaking, Evelyn burst into tears.

“Shade… are you trying to kick me out of Belladonna?”

She turned to Marcus, tears streaming down her face.

“Marc, what am I supposed to do?”

“Those people out there will eat me alive…”

A vein throbbed in Marcus’s forehead.

He glared at me like I’d just murdered his parents.

“Shade, you’re using your seniority and skills to bully a defenseless young girl?”

“You think that’s what we do?”

Before I could answer, the others jumped in.

Their voices grew sharper by the second.

“Shade, you know the rules.”

“If it really comes down to one of you leaving, it can only be her.”

“You’re basically sending her to her death.”

“Cold-blooded killer.”

“Even your own people aren’t safe from you.”

Dana looked troubled.

She stepped forward and grabbed my arm.

“Shade, just let it go.”

“You were a rookie once too. Give her a break…”

I stared at Dana.

My heart felt like it had plunged into freezing water.

Years ago, she’d accidentally triggered an alarm during an operation.

I’d already exfiltrated.

But I went back alone.

I dragged her out from a pile of bodies.

She’d been covered in blood when she clutched me and swore she owed me her life.

Now she stood against me.

Now she was taking her side, pleading for the girl who’d stolen my man.

“Dana, leaving is my choice.”

“And I never said I was making her leave…”

Marcus cut me off.

“Are you done yet?”

“This is all because you’re jealous.”

He soothed Evelyn while glaring at me.

“If you’re angry, take it out on me.”

“Evie’s young. She didn’t do anything wrong.”

“Why the hell are you hurting her?”

The emotional surge hit hard.

My mind was still unstable after the memory erasure.

A sharp pain drilled into my temples again.

I didn’t want to say another word.

I pressed my fingers against my throbbing temple and turned to leave.

“Shade! Don’t go. Please…”

Evelyn suddenly lunged at me.

She dropped to her knees and wrapped both arms around my leg.

Her sharp nails dug deep into the skin around my ankle.

Training took over.

The muscles in my leg locked instantly.

I jerked free.

I barely used any force.

But to everyone else, it looked like I’d kicked her away.

Evelyn let out a piercing scream.

She crashed backward onto the floor.

Her left hand bent at a sickening angle.

Marcus stormed forward and shoved me aside.

“Shade, you disgust me.”

Evelyn clutched her wrist.

“My fingers…”

“I can’t move them…”

Marcus gathered her into his arms.

When he looked at me, his eyes held a level of disgust I’d never seen before.

“She handles all our communications.”

“All our intelligence.”

“Her hands are everything to her.”

“And you tried to break them?”

He scooped up the nearly hysterical Evelyn.

As he passed me, his voice turned ice-cold.

“If you don’t want to work as a field operative, then get the hell out.”

“Go see how long you last in the real world.”

“Without Belladonna, let’s see how many days you survive.”

The last trace of sound vanished as everyone followed him out.

Even the newest recruit made a point of sidestepping me on his way past.

He gave a mocking snort.

“Old-timer, if you’re past your prime, just accept it.”

“Fighting over a man at your age?”

“Take a look in the mirror.”

My nails dug into my palms.

I forced myself not to react.

Marcus called while I was sitting in the big boss’s study, formally requesting to leave Belladonna.

The big boss’s face gave nothing away.

“Shade, you paid off your service bond years ago.”

“You’ve repaid Belladonna dozens of times over with what you’ve done for us.”

His eyes sharpened.

“I just don’t understand.”

“You and Marcus are about to get married.”

“Why leave now?”

I gave a bitter smile.

“There’s no future for Marcus and me anymore…”

Before I could finish, the comms unit in my palm lit up.

Somehow, Marcus’s call had connected.

It had been live for more than ten seconds.

His voice came through the speaker.

“Shade.”

“What did you just say?”

I lifted the comms unit to my ear.

My voice stayed calm.

“I’m outside.”

“You heard wrong.”

Silence stretched across the line.

When Marcus spoke again, his tone had softened.

“You left your knife with me.”

“Want to come get it?”

It was a folding tactical knife we’d taken from a target’s safe after our first operation together ten years ago.

Later, Marcus had carved our initials into the handle.

He’d once told me,

“If I ever stop loving you, use it to stab me through the heart.”

For ten years, I’d treasured that knife.

I never went anywhere without it.

Now I couldn’t bring myself to care.

“Keep it for now.”

“I’ll get it some other time.”

After I ended the call, the big boss slid an encrypted hardware wallet across the desk.

“You earned this.”

“It’s enough for you to start over anywhere on Earth.”

“As for what you choose to do next, Belladonna will never interfere.”

I went home and turned in early because of the headache.

Deep into the night, faint footsteps jolted me awake.

I shot upright.

Marcus stood there.

“I came to bring your knife back.”

He placed it on my nightstand.

I glanced at it.

“You didn’t need to come all this way.”

He shook his head.

“It’s been with you for ten years.”

“It’s witnessed everything we’ve been through.”

“Shade, we’ve been together for a decade.”

“We’ve survived more close calls than I can count.”

“Why let something this small destroy us?”

Fragments of memory surged through my head without warning.

On one operation, he’d shielded me with his body.

A bullet tore through his shoulder.

He’d nearly lost the use of his arm.

In the jungle, an explosion left me unable to walk.

He carried me almost sixty miles to get help.

The first time I took the blame for him, I endured brutal punishment.

With red-rimmed eyes, he’d sworn he’d never betray me for as long as he lived.

Back then…

Things had been so good.

Then Marcus’s voice ripped me out of the memories.

“Evie’s fingers are only fractured.”

“But she needs to rest.”

“You’ll cover her logistics work for the next few days.”

“Our wedding is next week.”

“The whole family will be there.”

“We need to keep up appearances.”

I looked at him calmly.

“Marcus.”

“I don’t want to marry you anymore.”

“So why should I keep up appearances?”
