His wolf lost control at once, howling wildly in the depths of his mind.

Kieran’s face went white. He clutched his chest and dropped to his knees.

Nessa reached out in alarm to support him.

“Kieran? What’s wrong?”

But he couldn’t hear a thing anymore.

His mate bond…

was gone.

Kieran knelt on the floor, his face deathly pale.

He desperately searched for the bond, for any trace of Seren’s scent… but found nothing.

“Kieran?”

Nessa reached out to help him.

He shoved her away hard.

“Don’t touch me!”

The room fell silent.

Kieran pulled himself to his feet with the sofa and immediately dialed Seren’s number.

No one answered.

Dad frowned. “Wait. What happened tonight? How did things get this bad so suddenly?”

“Did one of you slip up and let her find out?”

Nessa’s eyes flickered. “How could she have? Everyone played their part so well. How would Seren

have had a chance to find out?”

She sniffed, her eyes reddening further. “But I can guess why Seren did this.”

“She saw Kieran treating me well. She saw Elsie growing close to me. Of course she felt

threatened…”

Dad didn’t respond to her.

“Seren came home earlier than usual today. And the things she said before she left didn’t sound like

a tantrum.”

“Could it be…? What if she came home early that day and heard something?”

He turned toward the study, muttering, “Where’s my phone?”

“No, I need to check the security footage by the front door. If she really heard us…’

He hadn’t finished when Kieran, who had been standing there in a daze, suddenly got up and ran

out.

All he wanted now was to see Seren.

Immediately.

Right now.

He floored it, calling me over and over whenever he stopped at a light.

After several calls returned the same busy signal, he realized I had blocked him.

When he rushed back to the apartment, all he saw was Elsie curled up on the sofa, the tears on her

face half-dried.

But he didn’t stop to comfort her. He strode straight to the bedroom.

Half of the closet-the half that belonged to Seren-was empty.

Her bank cards and passport were gone from the drawer.

Only a Luna ring remained on the nightstand.

He sank to the floor.

He knew he’d gone too far this time.

He’d meant to explain everything properly.

He’d only given in to temptation because the alcohol had lowered his inhibitions.

He never thought she’d find out, but he hadn’t expected Seren to come home in the middle of the

night.

Even after she’d caught them the night before, he still clung to a sliver of hope. Seren loved this family. She loved him and Elsie.

Somewhere deep down, he had even believed, arrogantly, that she’d throw a fit at most and return to normal after a couple of days.

But now the empty half of the closet felt like a slap across his face.

Elsie ran over barefoot and wrapped her arms around his leg.

“Dad, is that bad woman really never coming back?”.

“I… I just didn’t want her to be my mom anymore… but I don’t want her to leave.”

“Waaah, Dad, call the bad woman and tell her to come home, okay?”

Kieran looked down at his daughter.

The broken mate bond in his chest sent another dull pulse of pain through him.

He dropped down and gripped Elsie’s shoulders.

“Elsie, where’s your smartwatch? Call her. She’ll answer you for sure.”

He sounded desperate, like a drowning man grabbing the last piece of driftwood.

Seren loved Elsie so much. She couldn’t possibly abandon her own daughter.

Right.

She definitely wouldn’t.

Elsie nodded obediently and ran to the entryway cabinet to get her smartwatch.

Just then, Kieran’s phone rang.

It was Dad.

He had barely answered, without even saying hello, when the urgent voice on the other end came

through.

“Kieran, something’s happened.”

“Seren may have… known everything all along.
