“What did you say? There’s nothing wrong with me?”

I stared at him, confused.

He took off his glasses and nodded once.

“Based on your assessment scores and your test results, your mental health is entirely normal.’

My brain still hadn’t caught up, and I kept asking him to confirm it.

“Could the observation window have been too short for the results to be accurate?

“I read online that psychiatric conditions need a period of clinical observation.”

“That’s possible.”

“So before I gave you these results, I contacted the hospital where you were treated.”

I could feel that something was off, and I realized he’d probably found something.

“There’s no record of you in their system. Not one visit, ever.”

“Ms. Shaw, the diagnostic report this Dr. Quinn gave you is very likely a forgery.”

That one flattened me.

A few days ago, I was told out of nowhere that I had multiple identities.

Now I was being told out of nowhere that there was nothing wrong with me.

My head was a complete mess.

I pulled out my phone to call Monica and ask her what exactly was going on.

Ray stopped me fast.

“Maddie, hold on.”

“Have you thought about why your family would hide this from you if there’s genuinely nothing

wrong with you?”

“Dr. Quinn wouldn’t take that kind of risk writing you a fake diagnosis for no reason.”

“Whatever’s behind this is probably…”

He didn’t finish, but I knew what he tueant.

In all likelihood, the three of them had built this together. It was a careful, patient, long-running setup aimed at me.

I felt like I’d fallen through ice.

I couldn’t believe a scheme this layered was real.

And I couldn’t stop turning over what they wanted out of it.

Maybe it was exactly what I’d guessed before, the thing they’d sworn was a misunderstanding.

“Ms. Shaw, take a moment. Don’t tip them off.”

“If your file really is fabricated, this goes well past your personal interests.”

I nodded.

Then, at Ray’s suggestion, I decided to empty that bank account.

Everything up to that point had been a lie.

So whoever had been pulling cash from that account all this time wasn’t me, either.

To save time, Ray drove me to the bank himself.

“Pull the money out, close the account, and don’t leave anything behind that can be used against

you.”

I was listening to him as I got out of the car.

Then another text alert came through. Somebody had just withdrawn $1,000 from my account.

My knuckles went white around the phone.

Right then, there was a noise a little way off.

I looked up without thinking.

The woman I’d run into a few days earlier was coming out of the ATM vestibule.

She had a thick stack of cash in her hand.

I assumed it was a coincidence, and then she got on the phone.

“Simon, I pulled fifty thousand out of Madeline’s account. I’ll put it in my sister’s account right

now.”

“She’s due any day. Take the money and book a decent birthing center.”

I watched her walk away, and it landed on me like a live wire.

Simon Shaw was my brother’s name.

After that, every piece of it fit.
