Every Night She Sleepwalked to Him—Until He Pretended No More Chapter 03

Ethan had the kind of face that could drive any woman out of her mind. He stood six feet three inches tall, with the body of an elite fashion model, and he was usually almost impossibly aloof.

Tonight, his silk robe hung open to his abs. Blindfolded and waiting, he looked dangerously inviting. Heat climbed into my ears.

Go ahead with what?

The captions supplied the answer.

[It is their signal. It means he is giving her permission to kiss him.]

[That is how his kissing skills improved so quickly.]

[He covers his eyes because he cannot stand looking at Rachel. With his eyes closed, he can imagine that she is Claire.]

[Lucky minor character. She gets the best of both worlds.]

[She is incredibly patient about this. She always stays in his room for a full hour and does not leave until she has kissed him enough.]

[His first kiss was supposed to be Claire’s, but Rachel stole it.]

[Do not be mad. He is only practicing on her. Claire will enjoy the results later.]

I sprang to my feet and fled. The instant the door closed behind me, Ethan tore off the blindfold. Complicated emotions filled his dark eyes.

Back in my room, I locked the door and crawled beneath the covers, my cheeks blazing. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw him leaning against the headboard, waiting for my kiss. I swallowed and found myself remembering the first time we met.

It had been three months earlier, on a quiet block lined with brownstones. Ethan stood beneath an old maple tree in a suit, talking on the phone. I mistook him for the real estate agent who was supposed to show me an apartment. I even took a discreet picture and texted my best friend.

Rachel: [Since when do real estate agents look this good? He’s ridiculously hot.]

He looked up and ended his call.

“Hi. Are you ready to show me the place?” I asked.

He blinked. “You are looking for a rental?”

Only then did I realize my mistake. “Yes. I had an appointment with an agent and thought you were him. Sorry.”

“No problem.” He walked into the small townhouse beside the maple tree.

After several fruitless days of apartment hunting, I was ready to give up. Homes in that neighborhood were outrageously expensive. Even a tiny room cost several thousand dollars a month. I was an attorney, and I would never have considered the area if it had not made my commute so convenient.

Then I ran into Ethan beneath the same maple tree. He told me he had an empty bedroom and would rent it cheaply if I fed his cat, Milo, whenever he worked late.

The first floor held a courtyard, living room, kitchen, and home gym. Upstairs were the primary bedroom, a study, a guest room, and a shared bathroom. The third floor had a sunroom and a large terrace. He asked only $3,000 for the guest room. I accepted immediately before he could change his mind.

I knew I had gotten an unbelievable deal, so I did more than feed Milo. Sometimes I cooked dinner. Ethan returned the kindness by making breakfast every morning. We were always courteous and careful around each other.

I never imagined that I was doing such shameless things to him at night.

How was I ever supposed to face him again?

The captions sneered.

[She takes advantage of him and then acts innocent.]

[If she truly respected his relationship, she would stop renting his room.]

[She will not leave willingly, but once Ethan meets Claire, he will throw her out.]

He was going to throw me out?
