Engraved with the Wrong Name Chapter 04

The door slammed shut.

His parting shot hung in the air.

“You’re being too emotional. Go calm down on your own.”

I didn’t care where he went.

Almost immediately, Jade’s social media lit up.

I knew it. I was always your first choice.

The engagement ring was back on her hand, looking as if it had finally found its rightful owner.

I gave it a like.

I took one last look at the apartment I had so painstakingly turned into a home, then gently closed the door behind me.

The next day, they arrived at the Family headquarters together.

The office was abuzz with congratulations.

I ignored it, focusing on my handover paperwork.

Since joining the Family, I had handled art deals totaling tens of millions.

Next week, I was scheduled to take over the West Side territory as a district manager, finally operating independently of Griffin.

I stood up with my documents, and my eyes met his.

He opened his mouth to speak.

I calmly turned and walked in the other direction.

“Matilda, these are my promotion documents. Could you please check if anything is missing?”

The majordomo, Matilda, flipped through the files with a puzzled expression.

“The promotion form for your department was already submitted.”

“What?”

I was stunned.

“Capo Griffin said that for the port project, Jade Vance from your department was the main planner. He requested the promotion slot be given to her, elevating her directly to district manager.”

District manager. My position.

Griffin was going to use my achievements, my sweat and blood, to pave the way for his ex-girlfriend.

My phone buzzed.

I looked down. A message from him.

Jade helped us out of an awkward situation. It’ll be hard for her when I have to clarify things. Consider this compensation. We’ll talk about your promotion later.

I stared at the words, an immense rage burning in my chest.

Rage at Griffin’s shamelessness.

And even more, rage at myself for loving him so much that I’d lost myself, allowing him to trample all over me.

But not this time. I wouldn’t tolerate it.

Without hesitation, I anonymously submitted evidence of Jade’s falsified credentials to the Don.

After confirming that I had completed the project independently, the Family’s internal affairs division verified and rejected her promotion in less than half a day.

During that time, Griffin sent me a flurry of messages, all of which I ignored.

Seeing the notification that my own promotion application had been approved, I finally let out a breath.

I opened my phone to Griffin’s last message.

Are you satisfied now that you’ve let off some steam? Remember to come home early tonight. This act is getting old.

Even now, he thought I was just throwing a jealous fit.

With a single tap, I blocked him.

I went straight back to the hotel where I was staying.

After the Family meeting, I was kept behind for a briefing on my new responsibilities.

But when I stepped out of the meeting room, the atmosphere at headquarters had shifted.

People who passed me shot me disgusted looks, quickly lowering their heads and hurrying away.

I caught indistinct snippets of conversation.

“So she’s the other woman?”

“She always seemed so proper. I never would have guessed…”

A knot of dread formed in my stomach.

Back at my desk, I grabbed my phone.

The secure messenger was on fire with messages from Jade.

A certain manager, initial K, has been harassing and trying to seduce my fiancé. When he rejected her, she maliciously reported my promotion. How can someone like that have a place in the Family!

The speculation began immediately.

Is she talking about Kimberly?

I knew there was a reason she skipped the engagement party. Turns out she was just bitter.

There were dozens of cropped chat screenshots.

Jade had meticulously deleted all of Griffin’s replies, making it look like a one-sided campaign of harassment on my part.

To avoid suspicion, Griffin and I had never made our relationship public.

But everyone had been at what they thought was Jade’s engagement party. It was obvious whose side they would take.

The chaos had been escalating for nearly an hour, with thousands of messages.

But Griffin, the man at the center of it, had remained silent.

In fact, the screenshots were clearly taken from his phone.

I didn’t dare to even think it. I quickly started typing a clarification.

Suddenly, there was a commotion at the entrance.

Jade burst in, shoving past anyone who tried to stop her, and strode directly toward me.

Before I could react, a sharp slap landed squarely across my face.

“You bitch! Seducing another woman’s fiancé! How dare you still show your face at headquarters!”
