Eloped Ex Wanted Me Back? I Became His Mafia Godmother! Chapter 09

My jaw dropped.

I knew Dante was hitting rock bottom, but I didn’t think he’d completely lose his mind.

By the time I got to the roof, he was balanced right on the edge.

His eyes were bloodshot, and he had a knife dug deep into Sienna’s neck.

She was covered in bright red blood, her eyes shut tight like she was seconds away from passing out.

The moment Dante saw me, he started crying like a baby.

“Mara, you came,” he choked out. “I knew you still cared. You still love me, right? Why else would you get here so fast?”

“Run away with me, Mara. Let’s start over. I’ll treat you like a queen this time, I swear!”

Honestly? I thought he belonged in a psych ward.

He was a wanted criminal on the run, and he seriously thought he could drag me into his mess?

I looked at him, completely deadpan. “Don’t flatter yourself. The cops begged me to come. If I knew you were holding Sienna, I wouldn’t have even gotten out of bed.”

Dante’s face twisted with pure, ugly rage. He pressed the blade harder, screaming into the wind. “I’m in this gutter because of this bitch! After the company went under, I went to grab my emergency cash, only to find out she’d been draining my accounts behind my back!”

“And her dying? All a scam! She was never sick! She never let me go to her doctor appointments because she was busy spending my money on male escorts!”

“I felt off last week and got tested. I have HIV, Mara! This nasty whore gave me HIV!”

The sheer amount of trash drama made my head spin. I just stood there, stunned.

But Dante took my silence as a sign. He looked at me, begging with his eyes. “Mara, with modern medicine, HIV isn’t a death sentence anymore. Can you just give me one more…”

“No!”

I cut him off, disgusted. “Dante, looking at you makes my skin crawl. You will never, ever get my forgiveness.”

“I have a husband who worships me, and two beautiful kids. You’re a broke, diseased felon. What makes you think I’d ever take you back? Do I look like a garbage disposal to you?”

The last bit of light in Dante’s eyes completely died.

He let out a hollow, pathetic laugh and dragged Sienna back another step, right over the ledge. “You’re right. A piece of shit like me doesn’t get a second chance.”

“I ruined you, Mara. My hands are too dirty. It’s time to pay the bill. If there’s a next life, I’ll do better.”

Before the words even faded, he twisted around and hauled Sienna off the roof with him.

As the wind rushed past him, his life flashed before his eyes.

He saw Mara, four months pregnant.

Under the warm lights of their old home, she had taken his hand, placing it gently on her belly. “Dante, look. The baby is kicking.”

Feeling that tiny heartbeat, the pure rush of becoming a father had kept him awake all night.

He remembered staying up to order a stack of parenting books. He had promised himself he’d be a protector, a good husband.

But he blew it. He blew all of it.

He let his own cheap lust blind him until he had nothing left.

He just hoped that wherever he was going, he’d get a chance to make it up to that baby.

It happened in the blink of an eye. Down on the street, the crowd went into a frantic scream.

Before I could even look over the edge, a pair of large, warm hands covered my eyes. “Don’t look, baby. It’s ugly.”

Adrian had stepped up right behind me.

I leaned back into his chest, letting out a long breath. “He finally got his karma.”

The sun finally broke through the clouds, burning away the dark shadow of the last five years.

Some things can never be forgiven.

But thank God, I finally found my way out of the dark.
