Three days later. Julian found my office.

I don’t know how he figured out where I worked.

I went down to get a coffee, and he rushed over to block my path.

He was unshaven, his clothes were wrinkled, and he had lost a lot of weight.

“Sera!” He grabbed my wrist.

I yanked it back with force.

“Don’t touch me.”

Julian’s eyes were bloodshot.

“Sera, Melody and I broke up.”

“She took the car and cleaned out the last of my savings.”

“She said as she left that I was just a loser who didn’t deserve her.”

“Sera. I have nothing left.”

He slumped onto the ground, covering his face and sobbing.

Passersby began to stare.

I looked down at him.

“Why are you telling me this?”

Julian looked up suddenly, staring at me intensely,

“Sera, can we start over? Please?”

“Didn’t you say you’d never leave me, no matter what happened?”

‘Have you forgotten about high school?”

He stood up and tried to step closer.

“The year your stepfather beat you, I hid you in my attic.”

‘I used all my pocket money to buy you medicine.”

‘I told you I’d protect you forever.”

“Sera. I just had a temporary lapse in judgment! Melody tricked me!”

‘Forgive me once! Just this once!”

He pulled a box from his pocket and opened it.

A simple silver band.

“Sera, let’s get married! I’ll marry you right now!”

I looked at the ring.

It wasn’t a 68,000 dollar diamond; it was a cheap silver ring worth maybe fifty bucks.

He gave his best to someone else and brought the leftovers to fool me.

I raised my hand and slapped him across the face.

The sound of the slap echoed on the street corner.

Julian’s head snapped to the side, and he looked at me in a daze.

“Julian, every time you bring up high school, it makes me sick.”

“Did you think you were my savior?”

“You were just using that tiny bit of charity to justify sucking my blood!”

I pulled a photocopy of a bank statement from my bag and slapped it against his chest.

“Look closely at what this is!”

The paper drifted to the ground.

Julian leaned down and saw the balance.

He looked up sharply, his face full of disbelief.

“You… where did you get this much money?”

I gave a cold laugh.

“I earned this over the last five years, drawing one piece at a time.”

“Because of your ‘saving for a house‘ lie, I saved every single cent.”

“I planned to bring this out on our eighth anniversary for a down payment.”

“I even picked out the floor plan, intending to put both our names on the deed.”

Julian began to shake violently.

He pointed at the paper, his lips trembling.

“You… why didn’t you tell me?”

“If you had told me sooner, how could I have…”

“How could you have cheated?” I finished the sentence for him.

“Julian, get this straight.”

“You cheated because you’re a selfish, rotten person at your core.”

“You enjoyed my sacrifice while looking down on me for not being glamorous enough.”

“You used my silence as your bragging rights.”

“You used my scars as an excuse to avoid responsibility.”

I took a step closer and looked him dead in the eye.

“You weren’t afraid I’d die.”

“You were just afraid I’d die in your apartment and lower the property value!”

Julian collapsed to his knees.

He grabbed his hair and let out a howl of despair.

“Sera! I was wrong! I was so wrong!”

I’ll give you all my money! I’ll give you every paycheck from now on!”

“Give me a chance! I can’t live without you!”

He lunged forward to grab my legs.

I stepped back and dodged him.

“Julian, it’s too late.”

“You personally destroyed the Seraphina Vance who loved you with all her heart.”

‘From now on, rot in your own schemes.”

I turned and walked back into the office building without looking back.

The sound of his sobbing was cut off by the glass doors.
