“You weren’t careful,” Cathwulf said to Thalyn. “One of the werewolves protecting you is your lover.”

Amarok spun around.

One Nightshade wolf went white and dropped to his knees under Amarok’s pheromones.

Korbin clapped a hand over his mouth in shock.

In that moment, Amarok knew everything. The truth hit him so hard he covered his mouth and gagged.

I sat close. I almost reached to pat his back, but I stopped myself. I set a pack of tissues on the table beside

him.

When he looked up, tears streamed down his face. He saw the tissues and closed his eyes in even more pain.

I’d always been gentle.

When we dated, I’d hunt in the woods just because he wanted venison. When he was tired, I’d sit with him for

hours at a café, listening to him talk about art.

I was still the same. But I wasn’t his anymore.

“Velvela,” he sobbed. “I’m sorry… I’m so sorry.”

I watched him cry, clutching the tissues so tight his knuckles turned white.

I just sighed and stepped back.

“It’s okay. It was a long time ago.”

He looked up, lips shaking. “No… Velvela, please… forgive me.”

Cathwulf stepped in front of me, cold and firm. “Amarok, stay away from my Luna.”

I stood behind Cathwulf, feeling completely peaceful.

Amarok stood frozen.

Then he slowly bowed his head, shoulders slumping.

His tall, strong body looked smaller. All his confidence and power left him. He watched us walk away together.

Later, I heard about Amarok from pack news. It shocked the whole forest.

He testified against Thalyn and her mother for murdering Wilderun’s former Luna.

They were found guilty and locked in the dungeons for life.

I became my father’s heir. A new alpha was chosen from Wilderun’s betas.

My father was old and sick. I never forgave him, but I put him in a private nursing home. He died not long

after.

I stayed Luna of Valehowl Pack. Cathwulf and I patrolled the borders and kept rogues away.

One day, I pointed at an empty shop. “That’d be perfect for a repair shop!”

Cathwulf smiled. “You love fixing cars that much?”

I laughed. “Come on-a Luna who can fix cars is awesome.”

My kids ran and played in the street, their laughter echoing far away.

I never had nightmares again.
