“Elara, you might not know this,” he said, his voice softening dangerously, “but I pursued you. I married you. because I wanted Seraphina to be happy.”

He’d married me just to make another woman happy.

“Why?”

“Why would you do this?”

I didn’t want to ask. But the words came out anyway.

“I’ve loved her for years.”

“You clung to my brother. You even went to Grandpa.”

“After you broke up, you still wouldn’t leave the Blackwood family. Seraphina was afraid you’d come back for

him.”

“So I came home.”

His voice cut through me like ice.

I thought he’d stopped loving me. That he’d changed his mind.

But it had all been a lie. I’d been alone in everything.

“Elara, apologize to Seraphina.”

He pulled me roughly. I stumbled, leaning against the doorframe, weak.

“It’s okay, Kael. It’s my fault. Elara had every right to hit me.”

“No. Seraphina, I told you I’d never let you get hurt.”

“Apologize, Elara.”

I pressed a hand to my aching stomach and stared at Kael.

The man I’d loved with all my heart.

The man I’d been happy to carry a child for.

Even when he asked for a divorce, I’d thought there had been something real between us. That letting him go

was the kind thing to do.

If he’d loved me, I never could have left.

But it had all been a lie. I was always the one left behind.

After a long moment, I laughed quietly.

“Apologize? Over my dead body.”

“I’ve never been more sure of anything in my life. You’re a monster.”

“You make me sick.”

Kael’s face paled. He looked shaken for the first time.

He glared at me.

“Sick? You regret it now? You wish you never met me?”

“Take it back, Elara. Don’t think you can get away with this.”

“Apologize to her.”

My stomach hurt too badly to speak. I just shook my head.

“No apology, and you won’t get a single cent of the money I promised you.”

He thought he had control. “Don’t forget that prenuptial agreement you signed. If we divorce, you get nothing from the Blackwood family.”

The worst mistake I ever made was believing Kael’s lies.

Believing he loved me. Believing he’d give me a home.

I pulled my wrist free, my voice weak.

“Do whatever you want, Kael. I wish I never met you.”

I opened the door with all the strength I had left.

Darien Blackwood was standing in the hallway.

I didn’t look at him.

All the things in the hall-the gifts I’d once thought were given with love-now just made me feel ashamed.

Darien gently touched my sleeve. “Elara…”

I turned slowly, tears finally falling.

“You’re all so cruel.”

“Stay away from me. Please.”

I never wanted to see anyone from the Blackwood family again.
