Changing My Flight, I Canceled the Toxic Family Forever Chapter 02

In the end, my parents decided to take Chloe out for dinner.

Before they left, Chloe glanced at me. “Emma, do you want to come?”

Before I could answer, Ethan spoke first, “She never eats with us anyway. You know that.”

Then he shot me a look of disgust. “She has no warmth at all. Having someone that cold in this family is embarrassing.”

My face burned under his words.

For a moment, I wanted to crawl into a hole and disappear.

But more than anything, the unfairness cut deep.

Chloe loved spicy food.

Every time we went out, they picked a Thai restaurant for her.

I had a sensitive stomach and couldn’t handle it.

So I could only sit there and pick at plain rice.

Then my parents would accuse me of being difficult.

They said I was ruining Chloe’s appetite.

After enough times, I simply stopped going.

My silence had never earned their concern.

Instead, it became proof that I was cold-hearted.

Chloe stuck out her tongue and stopped trying to persuade me.

After she followed Sarah and David out the door, I went into the kitchen alone and made myself a bowl of chicken noodle soup.

I sat alone at the dining table and finished it in silence.

Then I carried the bowl to the sink and washed it quietly.

I had just put down the dish towel when my phone rang.

It was Mom.

After dinner, they had taken Chloe to the shopping mall for clothes.

Mom pointed her camera at a row of T-shirts behind her.

“Which color do you like? Pick one.”

I hesitated between blue and white.

Sarah waved it off like money was no object. “Wrap up both of them.”

The second the call ended, I broke down weeping.

But this time, they were tears of joy.

Compared with Chloe’s expensive designer dresses, those T-shirts barely mattered.

But at least it proved my mom still thought of me.

For one reckless moment, I even wanted to change my college applications back.

I wanted to stay near my parents after all.

Not long after, they came home.

Just as I expected, Sarah, David, and Ethan walked in with their arms full, dozens of shopping bags hanging from their hands.

Every single one came from the newest collections at luxury boutiques, all for Chloe.

I hurried over and reached for the shirt I thought was mine.

Then I heard Chloe brag proudly. “That was such a good deal. All these outfits were only about seven grand. They even threw in two free T-shirts.”

My hand froze halfway in the air.

So they hadn’t suddenly changed.

They hadn’t started caring about me after all.

Bitterness surged through my chest.

“Give those T-shirts to whoever you want. I don’t want them.”

I let my hand fall, turned away, and ran back to my room.

The moment I shut the door, I couldn’t hold back my tears anymore.

Their complaints drifted through the crack beneath the door.

“Unbelievable. Chloe was kind enough to give her two new shirts, and she still doesn’t know how to be grateful.”

“Who did she get that stubborn temper from?”

Ethan chimed in too, “Exactly. She’s nothing like Chloe. No wonder we don’t like her.”

Then he asked my parents even more bluntly, “Are you sure you really had twins back then? God, if Chloe were my only sister, that would be perfect.”

Don’t worry. Your wish would come true soon.

I said quietly in my heart.

Soon, Ethan wouldn’t have this unwanted extra around.

Mom and Dad wouldn’t have this unlovable daughter either.

And I wouldn’t have to keep begging for love I was never going to get.
