LAIKYN GARCIA. 

It takes one taste of the food in front of me to go berserk. 

I’d blame it on my hunger pang but Goddess knows this is the best food I’ve had in a while. 

Not even Esme and Esma cook this well. 

“That good huh?” 

A voice booms in front of me and before I can raise my head to meet her because she’s been watching me from the counter for the last ten minutes, the woman invites herself to the opposite 

seat near me. 

Her blonde hair is the first thing that comes to sight coupled 

with the tattoo on her neck. 

Same tattoo that is on Vinn’s neck. 

“Jen“, Vinn’s voice comes out as some sort of warning. 

Echo told him to watch me and the beta has been taking his job 

too seriously. 

“Take a hike, Vinn. I’m gonna talk to her not choke her to 

death“, she jokes. 

I don’t find humor in the joke. 

“Alpha Echo won’t like this in the least bit“, Vinn warns. 

“Yeah? Well, if I wanted to kill her, I would have poisoned her food, so relax. Gimme a minute to talk to the future Luna.” 

“One minute, Jen. One fucking minute.“” 

I hear Vinn’s receding footsteps disappear from behind me before blondie gives me a smile that doesn’t completely reach her eyes. 

“You made the food? It’s the best thing I’ve tasted since I 

came here so thank-.” 

She cuts me off as soon as her eyes take me in. Yeah, she doesn’t like me very much. I don’t think anyone in this fancy restaurant likes me very much either. 

“Five blood wars with the Alphas and you are the weirdest shit I‘ ve seen in a while, Laikyn. Have you ever seen a wolf’s head detached from its body because I can tell you I’ve seen that and worse but yet here you are, an enigma. And here I am wondering if we are doomed to…” 

Static covers my ears. A weird buzzing ping pongs in my brain 

from one corner to the other. 

Jen is talking but I can’t hear what she’s saying as my gaze 

crawls to the window that shows the street outside the 

restaurant we are in. 

It’s almost like a sixth sense. I feel it in my bones, I hear 

it in my brain and feel it inside my heart. 

Goddess, something’s bad about to… 

“Do…you hear that?” 

Her brows lifted, a sneer peppering her face, Jen is about to answer me but her words never leave her mouth. 

Chaos comes in the form of an explosion that breaks all the windows. 

One minute I’m speaking to the blonde woman who seems to hate me and the next, I can’t see… I can’t see anything from the smoke. 

Everyone in the restaurant scampers to safety. I can hear their footsteps, listen to the shrill screams, I can also hear the pounding of my heart that has me resorting to getting on the ground as I try to find cover. 

“Shit! Get down. Get the fuck down!” 

Someone shouts from afar. 

Smoke latches in my lungs like glue and I can’t breathe. 

I can’t help but shake too as I crawl on the ground trying to call for help. 

“Don’t shift! Don’t shift! Makes it easier for them to kill us. I repeat, don’t fucking shift!” 

Vinn? 

That’s Vinn? 

I open my mouth to say something but fear is a nasty emotion 

especially when you hear the sound of gunfire descending down faster than raindrops. 

My eyes water and I try to wipe the burn away with my hands but that makes it worse. I’m about to get to the table nestled by the corner to hide when I spot a small figure leaning against an overturned chair a few steps from where I am. 

Instinct has me moving to what I’m assuming is a child. The child is wearing a red–striped shirt and a pair of dark shorts. Getting to him in less than a minute has me thanking the Goddess. 

I touch his shoulder. 

“H–Hey, we have to hide…we have to hide right by…right by that 

table over there.” 

His shoulder is cold. 

No. Goddess, please no. 

I turn him around and it’s not the sight of blood on his forehead that makes me sick. 

It’s the eyes. The eyes that are looking at me but not really 

doing so. 

He is dead. 

This child…this boy is dead with a hole right between his… 

Goddess. 

Thunder quakes from the outside, harsh winds storm inside the now destroyed restaurant and then the rain comes and so do my tears. So does my fear and so does my scream. 

I don’t know how I make it to that table and hug my knees to my shoulders. I don’t know how long I sit there listening to the gunfire and the thunder competing to see who’s fiercer. 

All I know is, I have never tasted fear like I do right now. 

The dead boy isn’t the only body in this restaurant. By my right is a woman missing an arm. She’s dead. Her blood pools at my feet. 

Twenty steps from where I left the dead body is a dead wolf. I’ve never seen…death. 

I’ve never seen blood ebb out of a human body before. Why would someone do this? Why would anyone want this? 

“Lake? Lake, come on. I’m right here, sweetheart.” 

My eyes are two pools of tears as I cradle the warmth of the palm on my cheek. 

“Dead. They killed…them.” 

“I know. We have to leave.” 

“The child…he was innocent. He didn’t do anything.” 

The thunder roars even louder from outside. 

“Lastochka. We have to go. Now.” 

Echo’s voice acts like a tether and I hold onto him like a pup believing its mother’s words. 

His hands wrap around my thighs and waist and in record time, 

we are standing. 

The smoke is gone but you know what is not gone? The bodies. 

The dead people, the blood that is mixing from the pouring rain 

from outside. 

“Alpha“, Vinn appears out of nowhere looking guilty, his hair 

in spikes from the rain and his left arm, the one dangling 

against his body like a fallen branch, is bleeding like hell. 

“Clean up“, Echo bellows before his grey eyes fall on me. 

“Close your eyes.” 

It’s a command and I live on disobeying him but right now it 

feels like If I open my eyes while we get out of here, there’s 

no way I’ll recover from the turmoil inside me. 

There’s no way I’m recovering from this. 

Echo buckles me inside his car. A different one, because this 

one smells nothing like him. 

On the way home, the clouds only turn from grey to dark grey, the winds billowing like an anguish from the Goddess for what 

happened at Jen’s restaurant. 

“Jen? Is s–she okay?” 

Echo doesn’t answer me but the tick in his jaw tells me what I need to know. 

Jen and everybody else who was in there except Vinn is dead and the gnawing feeling inside me tells me only one thing. 

I killed them all. 

They are dead because of me, aren’t they?

“You think she’s responsible for this shit?” Nikolai asks angrily. “She’s shaken and has a high fever, the same thing that‘ 

s happening right now… can’t believe it…it should be 

impossible… we don’t know for certain.” 

Echo? 

What’s impossible? 

“You are okay, malysh but you need to breathe, baby. Breathe and calm down.” 

Riot is here too. 

How can I be calm though? 

“She’s never seen blood before. That could have been a fucking trigger.” 

What trigger? What’s Vuk talking about? 

“Dom could know the truth. That could explain him acting 

weirdly to her than he has with other chicks.” 

“We don’t tell Dom about this till we know for certain.” 

That doesn’t sound very nice. 

“Fever’s not going down, Niko. It’s only getting worse.” 

“We can’t bring in a healer. No fucking doctors till we figure out what’s going on.” 

Echo’s ‘I’m in charge‘ voice falls heavy in the room. 

I’m too tired to ask every question pounding in my mind. 

“Stay with her. It’s your scents she had around her body first“, Vuk speaks before he adds, “That doesn’t mean you fuck her, Riot. Good night, lotus flower.” 

His lips land on my forehead and just like that, he disappears. 

Echo is not in the room too because I don’t smell his scent. 

The only two men in the room are the ones lying in front of me and behind me. 

“Riot… Nikolai“, I murmur. 

Riot holds my chin then he asks me a question I’ve never been asked before. 

“Does it always rain when you are scared, Laikyn?”
