The next morning, I went to school like usual.

When I reached the school entrance, I saw a group of people gathered around the hallway bulletin

board.

I didn’t know what they were looking at.

I walked closer and saw a large handwritten sign posted there.

“SAT Hotel Sign–Up”

The handwriting was beautiful.

It was obviously Chloe’s.

She had drawn a table underneath it, asking anyone who needed lodging to sign up. She said she would help coordinate everything.

Coordinate what?

Whose hotel?

I glanced at it and walked around it without stopping.

When I entered the classroom, Chloe was already there, sitting in her seat and talking to Sophie.

When she saw me come in, she looked up, then lowered her eyes and kept talking to Sophie.

“I already asked a few hotels. One of them is willing to give us a group rate, maybe 40% off. But the closest hotels to the test center won’t lower their rates, because they have no trouble selling

rooms.”

Sophie made a miserable face.

“40% off is still expensive. It’s still over $100 a night My parents definitely won’t agree to 2 nights.”

“There’s nothing we can do,” Chloe sighed.

“It’s not like everyone can sleep in their cars.”

I walked straight to the back row and sat down.

From that seat, I could see the whole classroom clearly, and I could also see the maple trees by

the field outside.

Chloe looked back at me.

Then she turned around again.

Classes that morning were fairly calm.

What wasn’t calm was the number of people who came looking for me during breaks.

Sophie came first.

“Maya.”

She stood beside my desk, holding a bag of chips and eating as she talked.

“Is Bennett Inn really out of rooms? I heard 5 rooms got canceled yesterday. Is that true?”

News traveled fast.

“I don’t know. I didn’t ask.”

Sophie curled her lip.

“How could you not know? It’s your family’s hotel.”

“David and Laura handle it. I handle studying.”

Sophie was shut down by that.

She held a chip halfway in her mouth, her expression awkward.

She stood there for 2 seconds, then walked away.

Then came Tyler.

“Maya.”

He leaned against the wall, hands in his pockets, acting like he was only asking casually,

“I wanted to ask. About those 5 canceled rooms at Bennett Inn. Can you save 1 for me? I can pay.

It doesn’t have to be free. Just hold 1 room for me

I looked up at him.

Tyler’s family wasn’t poor.

He wore brand–name clothes every day.

He could afford a hotel.

He just wanted to stay at the best hotel and pay less.

“You can book it through the front desk.”

“Or online.”

“It’s more expensive online,” Tyler said with a smile. ‘Can’t you give me a friends–and–family rate? You’re the owner’s daughter.”

“Sorry. I don’t make those decisions.”

Tyler’s smile faded a little.

He looked at me for 2 seconds, said, “Okay,” and walked away.

Then came Noah, Ava, and Emma, one after another.

Their reasons were all different, but what they wanted was the same.

Could I make it cheaper?

Could I save them a room?

Could I help them out?

I didn’t agree to any of them.

At lunch, I sat alone in the corner of the cafeteria with chicken tenders, tater tots, and a carton of milk in front of me.

I bit into a cold chicken tender and had no appetite.

My phone buzzed again.

This time, it was David calling.

“Maya.”

David’s voice sounded a little hoarse.

“Laura said there were cancellations yesterday. Do your classmates need the rooms? If they do, I’ll

hold them.”

“No, David.”

I chewed the chicken tender slowly and swallowed

“Sell them. Don’t hold them.”

“Are you sure?” David asked again. “Staying too far away before the SAT is rough. If they need

rooms, we shouldn’t let them sit empty.”
