Back to the Day I Protected the Alpha Over My Mate Chapter 05 The Aspiration for Beta

The day I fully healed, I went to see Kane. I stood outside his study. Three seconds later, he called, “Come in.”

Kane was at a long table, maps spread out a cold cup of moonlit wine by his hand. He looked up, surprised.

“Are your wounds healed?”

“Yes.”

Kane leaned back, waiting. I took a deep breath. “Alpha, I want to be the Beta.”

Kane’s hand stopped on the map. He stared at me for five seconds, his amber eyes full of shock, scrutiny, and

assessment.

“Graymoon Pack has never had a female Beta. “The Beta acts as the Alpha’s aide and has heavy responsibilities. Are you sure you can handle it?”

“I’m sure.”

“Give me reasons.”

“I advised Dylan. I have the experience and want to be independent, not at others’ mercy.”

Kane was silent. He stood, walked to the window, and came back to me. I thought he’d reject me.

“I need to consult the Council of Elders. I can’t guarantee approval.”

“I understand.”

“Go.”

As I left, he called, “Lara. The path you choose, see it through, even if it means death.”

“I know.”

He said nothing.

Three days later, the Council met. I wasn’t allowed. Kane told me later.

Twelve elders sat around a table. When Kane proposed a female Beta, the room erupted.

“Absurd!” Elder Reddy slapped the table. “The Beta is important. A female Beta will damage the pack’s reputation.”

Another elder chimed in, “What can she do? If there’s an attack, will she rely on others?”

Kane waited, then said, “I’m not sure of her ability, but she has courage and reasons. She deserves a try. If the Beta

has to do everything, what about the others?”

The room fell silent.

“I’m not making her Beta immediately Just a trial. If it works, she stays. Otherwise, she knows the consequences.”

Elder Reddy relented. “Give her three months. If she can’t, she’s out.”

The news spread, and the pack was in an uproar.

The tavern, the training grounds, the border-everywhere I went, the talk was the same.

“A she-wolf as Beta?”

“A female running patrols?”

“Has the Alpha lost his mind?”

I didn’t hear the whispers myself, but the wind carried them anyway. Until they reached me.
