All eyes turned to me.

I lowered my head, a bitter smile tugging at my lips that no one could see.

What was I still hoping for?

I should have known the answer all along.

“Fine.”

Chloe shot me a triumphant grin.

I glanced at her out of the corner of my eye, said nothing, and turned to leave.

Ethan seemed about to say something, but in the end, he stayed silent.

Stepping out of the ballroom, the cool night breeze of summer brushed against my face, lifting the gloom

from my heart.

I was about to wander along the path when a small car by the road suddenly lit up and honked twice at me.

I froze.

Jasper poked his head out of the window, his face lighting up with a big smile.

“Why’d you come out so early? I thought it’d last much longer.”

I stared in surprise.

“What are you doing here?!

“I looked up Ethan’s company gala easily. I was worried you might drink too much and have no one to take

you home.”

Jasper whispered,

“Your husband’s mistress is here too, right?”

I had to laugh at his bluntness. “Yeah. We just had a showdown. The odds weren’t in my favor, so I had to

make a tactical retreat.”

But Jasper wasn’t joking.

He studied my face carefully, then waved me over.

“Do you want to watch the sunrise?”

No.

Sitting in the bumpy little car as we wound up the mountain road, I felt a little dazed. Why had I agreed to

come watch the sunrise in the middle of the night? I’d turned down my Rolls with the starlight headliner, a

comfortable ride home to my luxury mattress, to bounce around in this beat-up used car with Jasper.

The top of the mountain was pitch black. He carefully took my hand and led me to sit on a large rock.

I brushed the hair out of my eyes, stunned into silence by the sight before me.

The boundless darkness faded into a clear deep blue, with stars dotting the sky and the city’s lights

shimmering below, blending beautifully.

Behind us was the dark universe, and for a moment I couldn’t tell where the light from the sky ended and the

earth’s began.

The summer night wind carried the scent of plants and grass as Jasper hugged me from behind.

“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?

“When I’m in a bad mood, I come here.”

I fell silent for a moment. “How did you know I’m upset?”

He rested his chin on my neck.

“Your eyes are crying.”

I said nothing.

All in all, Jasper and I had only been together for six months.

What about Ethan?

I thought for a moment, realizing I couldn’t even count the years anymore.

High school, college, graduation…

It must have been over a decade. I used to keep track, but now I couldn’t be bothered.

Someone who’s only known me for six months can tell I’m sad-could Ethan really not see it?

Of course he could.

He just didn’t care.

I finally understood the question that had been bothering me for so long.

I never got how Ethan could abandon me so easily after all these years, turning his affection to someone else overnight.

It turns out it has nothing to do with time.

Only with love-whether there is any or not.

I turned my head, only to find Jasper staring at me.

There were countless stars above and thousands of lights below, but his eyes reflected only me.

“Lila.”

He never called me sister, always using my nickname directly.

He said, “Don’t be sad. You’re better than anyone else.

“It’s his loss for not loving you, not yours.”

Maybe the wind blew into my eyes, because suddenly my vision blurred.

I said nothing, leaning in to kiss him.

Jasper froze for a second, then took control. The kiss of a young man was fiery and unrestrained, like a

single spark that could ignite a prairie fire.

I felt my reason evaporate and burn away with his kiss.

Even the wind seemed to stand still, trapped here, growing warmer with us.

When Jasper’s sweat dropped onto my eyelid, I closed my eyes and hugged him tightly.

Just this once, I told myself.

Call me selfish.

Let me follow my heart.

Even if it’s just for this moment, let another man completely fill the void Ethan left behind.
