Cassian and Rowan both looked at me first.

Then Sienna’s tear-streaked face stole all of their attention.

“Cassian, didn’t you tell me Coco had all his shots? You said he was perfectly healthy. How could this happen?”

“Rowan, please.”

“You bought Coco’s food. You promised you’d always take care of him.”

“Please, take him to the vet. He’s bleeding so much!”

Her voice shook with every word. Tears overflowed from her eyes.

Cassian’s expression softened instantly.

He stubbed out his cigarette, walked over, and crouched down to take the dog from Sienna’s arms.

“Don’t cry.” His voice was quiet. “I’ll take Coco to the vet. Come with me.”

Rowan crouched down too, brushing her tears.

“Let’s go. I’ll drive.”

Then the four of them left with a bleeding dog. Not one of them looked back.

Silence fell.

I lay curled up amid the shattered pottery and blood.

Moonlight fell across my leg. Blood still seeped steadily from the wound.

Dragging my injured leg, I propped myself up on my elbows and crawled across the ground.

Inch by inch, I finally reached the table. My fingers closed around my phone.

“911. What’s your emergency?”

“Seventeen Monroe Road. I’ve been bitten by a dog. I need an ambulance.”

“Help’s on the way. Can you stay awake for me?”

I couldn’t answer. The phone slipped from my hand.

The sound of my heartbeat faded until everything went dark.

When I came to, I found myself in a hospital room.

My leg was wrapped in thick bandages.

“You’re awake,” the nurse said gently. “Try not to move—we just finished dressing your wounds.”

“You already received your rabies shot.”

“That dog bit down hard. Its fangs nearly tore through the muscle.”

“Good thing you got here in time—no damage to the bone.”

I stayed silent.

Before I could gather my thoughts, the nurse flipped through my chart and casually added, “But don’t worry. The baby is fine. Strong heartbeat.”

“The rabies vaccine is safe during pregnancy, so it won’t harm the babies.”

I froze. “What baby?”

The nurse paused. She looked up at me, surprised.

“You didn’t know? You’re six weeks pregnant.”

“And from the ultrasound, it looks like twins. Congrats.”

For a moment, the pain, the shredded skin on my leg, every terrifying thought racing through my mind—they all disappeared.

I swallowed, my throat tight.

“Could you hand me my phone? I need to call my husband.”

The nurse handed me the phone from the nightstand.

The screen lit up. Dozens of missed calls.

Every single one was from my husband. They stretched from last night until this morning.

I was just about to hit call—when the door to my hospital room swung open.
