After Sharing Half My Husband with His Mistress Chapter 06

After Sharing Half My Husband with His Mistress Chapter 06

I dropped the final bank statement onto the mahogany desk.

The paper felt like lead against the wood. A freezing current rushed through my veins, instantly replaced by a sharp, violent fury.

“Three years,” I said, my voice dangerously hollow. “Three years of my life, built on a complete illusion.”

Evan stood perfectly still on the other side of the desk. “He played you. And he played himself.”

“He manipulated my guilt,” I shot back, gripping the edge of the table. “He made me believe I was failing our marriage, while he funded a professional grifter.”

“So what is your next move?” Evan asked.

I looked up, meeting his unyielding stare. “Help me tear him down.”

“I will,” Evan replied without a second of hesitation. “But there is a price.”

I crossed my arms. “Name it. You want stock options? A guaranteed merger with Kensington Corporation?”

“No.” Evan shook his head. “I want you.”

The silence in the study became absolute.

“Excuse me?” I asked.

“You agree to be my woman,” he stated, his tone completely flat.
“Officially. No hiding. No secrets.”

I stared at him, my pulse hammering against my ribs. “Are you out of your mind? I am entirely vulnerable right now. My marriage just imploded twenty minutes ago. Are you taking advantage of me?”

Evan closed the distance between us in two massive strides.

His hands clamped onto my waist. He walked me backward until my spine hit the oak-paneled wall. The impact knocked a short gasp from my throat.

“Taking advantage?” Evan asked, his face inches from mine. His eyes were entirely black in the dim light.

“Let me go,” I demanded, pushing against his chest.

He didn’t budge. His grip tightened, locking me in place.

“I have wanted you since I was eighteen, Iris,” he murmured, his voice a low, vibrating threat. “I watched you walk away from me. I watched you throw your life away for a coward. Now that you are free, I have absolutely no reason to play the gentleman.”

I glared up at him. “I am not a trophy to be claimed.”

“You are mine,” Evan countered fiercely. “You always were. I am just putting my name back where it belongs.”

“I haven’t even filed the divorce papers yet.”

“Then we will file them tomorrow,” he said. He released my waist, stepping back just enough to let me breathe. “Get dressed. We have a corporate mixer to attend.”

The next forty-eight hours moved at a breakneck pace. Evan did not hide his intentions. He flaunted them.

My father hosted a massive networking banquet at the Kensington Plaza. Evan arrived at my estate in his bulletproof Maybach. He didn’t send a driver to the door. He walked up the front steps himself, took my hand, and led me to the car.

When we entered the Plaza ballroom, the chatter died instantly.

Evan kept his hand firmly on the small of my back. He guided me through the crowd of executives and politicians, ignoring the wide-eyed stares.

A senior board member from the Monroe faction stepped into our path. He held a scotch glass, his face flushed with indignation.

“Mr. Montgomery,” the board member sputtered. “We didn’t expect you to escort Bruce’s wife tonight. This is highly inappropriate.”

Evan stopped. He didn’t raise his voice, but the sheer authority in his tone cut through the room.

“Adjust your expectations,” Evan ordered.

“Sir, she is still married to—”

“Ms. Iris is under my personal protection now,” Evan interrupted, his gaze locking onto the older man. “No one gets to bully her. No one questions her presence. If the Monroe family has a problem with that, they can bring it directly to me.”

The board member paled and stepped aside.

“You are making us a massive target,” I whispered as Evan led me toward the VIP tables.

“I am setting a trap,” he replied, handing me a glass of champagne. “Bruce is a narcissist. He can handle you leaving him. He cannot handle you replacing him with someone more powerful.”

Evan was right.

The trap snapped shut at midnight.

I was sitting in the upstairs lounge of the Kensington estate, staring out the massive bay window. The iron gates at the bottom of the driveway were locked tight.

The intercom on the wall buzzed aggressively.

“Ms. Kensington,” Marcus announced through the speaker. “We have a hostile situation at the perimeter.”

“Is it Bruce?” I asked.

“Yes, ma’am. He bypassed the outer checkpoint. He is demanding entry.”

I walked to the window and pushed the heavy glass pane open. The cold night air rushed into the room.

Down below, Bruce stood entirely bathed in the harsh glare of the security spotlights. His designer suit was rumpled. His tie hung loosely around his neck, and his hair stood up in wild, frantic angles.

Evan’s private security team formed a solid wall of muscle between Bruce and the iron bars.

“Let me through!” Bruce screamed, shoving at the chest of the nearest guard. The guard didn’t even flinch.

“Stand down, Mr. Monroe,” the guard warned.

“Iris!” Bruce yelled, tilting his head back to scream at the house. “I know you are up there! Open the gate!”

I leaned against the windowsill. I didn’t say a word. I just watched him unravel.

“Iris, please!” Bruce begged, his voice cracking violently. “I know I was wrong! I see it now!”

“He looks pathetic,” Evan said.

I didn’t turn around. Evan stepped out of the shadows of my bedroom. He moved up right behind me, his chest brushing against my shoulders.

“He is desperate,” I corrected. “Judy must have pushed too hard.”

“Judy demanded the trust fund today,” Evan noted, resting his hands on my hips. “My contacts on his board confirmed it. She tried to freeze his personal accounts to secure the baby’s future. He finally realized he was being played.”

Down in the driveway, Bruce gripped the iron bars.

“I will handle the Judy situation!” Bruce shouted, tears shining on his cheeks. “I swear to god, I will cut her off completely! Just open the gate! Come home with me!”

Evan slid his right arm entirely around my waist. He pulled my back flush against his chest, making our physical connection impossible to miss from the ground below.

Bruce stopped screaming.

His eyes locked onto the window. He saw Evan’s arm wrapped securely around me. The color drained completely from Bruce’s face.

Evan leaned forward, resting his chin near my temple. He looked down at the ruined man in the driveway.

“Bruce,” Evan called out.

His voice wasn’t loud, but it carried perfectly through the dead silence of the night. It was laced with absolute, lethal mockery.

“You only realize you are wrong now?” Evan asked.

Bruce staggered backward, clutching his chest as if he had been physically shot. “Evan? What are you doing with my wife?”

Evan’s lips curled into a cruel smile.

“Too bad, Bruce,” Evan stated coldly. “She is no longer someone you can ‘handle’.”

“Get your hands off her!” Bruce roared, lunging at the gates again.

The guards instantly tackled him to the gravel.

I watched my husband thrash against the pavement. The man who had humiliated me, lied to me, and chosen a grifter over our marriage was now eating dirt outside my house.

Evan reached up and gently closed the window, shutting out the sound of Bruce’s pathetic screams.

“He will not stop here,” I said, turning to face Evan in the quiet room.

“I know,” Evan replied, his eyes dropping to my lips. “Tomorrow, he will try to destroy my company to get you back.”
