He blinked. “What?”

Every phone in the office buzzed.

A company-wide announcement.

Marcus Webb and Tessa Hart were terminated for improper workplace conduct. And I was taking over Marcus’s role.

The room went quiet.

Everyone stared at their screens, then at me, then at Marcus.

Then Tessa burst in, sobbing, pointing at me. “You! You knew that whole Al thing was garbage—and you didn’t say a word! This is your fault! I’m out of a job because of you—you owe me. You’re going to make this right!”

I just looked at her.

Someone grabbed her from behind and yanked her to the floor.

It was Penelope Webb—Marcus’s wife.

Penelope kicked her. “Homewrecker.”

“You’ll never have a good day again.”

Marcus ran over and tried to pull her away. “Baby—listen—she came onto ME!”

“She was always in my office! I never touched her!”

“You have to believe me!”

Penelope slapped him. “Believe you?”

“I watched the footage from your office, Marcus. How long were you going to lie?”

She threw a divorce agreement at his feet. “Sign it. Get out.”

Marcus stared at the papers, shell-shocked.

Then he lunged at Tessa, hands around her throat. “YOU! You ruined everything!”

“If you hadn’t thrown yourself at me, none of this would’ve happened!”

Tessa clawed at his face. “Let go of me!”

“Marcus—you promised to promote me! You promised to marry me!”

“You sat in your office every day telling me how much you hated Elena! You WANTED me to replace her!”

He slapped her. “Bullshit! You seduced ME!”

“If you hadn’t dressed like a slut and hung around my office, I’d never have looked twice at you!”

“Now my wife is leaving me! I have no job! ALL BECAUSE OF YOU!”

Tessa was crying, clawing at his collar. “Me?! You lying piece of shit!”

“You told me your marriage was over! You said you’d marry me! But you never told me your wife was Harrison’s niece! You were USING me!”

They crashed into the desk, sending everything flying.

Everyone backed away, whispering.

“Oh my god, it was actually true…”

“I called it. Marcus was always weird with Tessa, and you guys told me I was imagining things.”

“I was actually jealous of her for a minute. Now it’s obvious—she just screwed her way up.”

“Well. That’s over. Job gone, reputation trashed.”

“Marcus deserved it. Had a wife and still went for an intern.”

“Now he’s got nothing. No wife, no job, nothing.”

Penelope watched them, then turned to me, eyes red. “You’re Elena. I owe you for this. If it weren’t for you, I’d never have known how long he’d been lying.”

“None of this is your fault.”

She walked out.

Marcus scrambled after her. “Baby—let me explain—”

Tessa grabbed his leg. “You’re not going anywhere! You owe me!”

“You ruined my career! My life! You’re responsible!”

Marcus kicked her off. “Get away from me, you bitch!”

He kicked hard.

Tessa flew backward, her head slamming into a sharp desk corner.

One scream. Then silence.

Everyone froze, screaming, retreating.

I watched it all coldly and called 911.

By the time the cops arrived, Tessa was unconscious.

Marcus was on his knees, hands trembling, whispering. “It was her fault… her fault…”

“I didn’t do anything…”

I heard later that Tessa died in the hospital.

Marcus got fifteen years for involuntary manslaughter.

And me?

I sat in my own office, watching the sun through the window.

Walter Grand hadn’t signed the hundred-million deal.

But he’d just approved a new one.

Not a hundred million.

Three hundred million.

I was still staring when my mom pushed the door open, carrying a bowl of chicken soup. “Elena, you’ve been running yourself ragged. Come on—I made this for you. Drink up while it’s hot.”

I met her eyes, took a sip, and felt the warmth spread. “Love you, Mom.”

This time, I was going to be okay. And so was she.
