After Rebirth, I Cleared My Name Through a Drunk Driving Incident Chapter 08

I asked for Jessica’s phone data. Messages. Photos. Videos. GPS history

Mark immediately objected. He said it was his sister’s privacy and I had no right to see it

The police overrode him and pulled her iCloud backup

anyway

Everything got restored

And when I saw it, my whole body went cold

In the days before she died, Jessica had been following

Mark. She’d recorded him

There were photos. Videos

Mark hugging another woman outside a hotel. Mark kissing her in a car. Mark getting close with her in an underground parking garage

And in every single image, he was smiling in a way I’d

never seen before

With her, he looked happy

With her, he looked alive

With me, he’d always been flat. Distracted. Distant

I told myself marriage just turned into that over time

That quiet was normal. That routine was enough

I was wrong

He had passion left. He just wasn’t giving it to me

Jessica found out. Then she confronted him

In one message, she wrote, How could you do this? How can you face Claire? If you don’t end it, I’ll tell her

myself.”

Mark wrote back with excuse after excuse. He cried. He apologized. He said he messed up. He said the other woman treated him too well and he lost control

Then he begged Jessica not to tell me. He said he’d end it. He said if I found out, the family would fall apart

Jessica didn’t waver. She wrote back, I’m giving you one week. If you’re still with her after that, I’m telling Claire. I won’t keep covering for you.”

One week. And that deadline ended the day before she

died

My whole body started shaking. The truth finally broke

open

Mark was cheating. Jessica found out. Jessica

threatened to expose him

So he chose the cruelest way out

He teamed up with his mistress, killed Jessica, and pinned it all on me

Kill his sister. Destroy his wife. Silence the one person threatening him, then get rid of the woman standing between him and everything she owned

If I died, he got freedom. He got money. He got my property. He got the other woman

What kind of man does that

A rotten one. A vicious one

And somehow I married him

Even when I died in my last life, I still thought he was

innocent

The police moved quickly once they dug through his messages, transfers, and travel records

Soon they identified the woman

Amanda Pierce. Thirtyone. Single. A cybersecurity engineer working in downtown Houston, in the same building as Mark’s company

They’d been in close contact since the year before. The messages were full of flirting

By early that year, they’d already been checking into hotels, Airbnbs, and shortterm rentals together

Every time Mark told me he was working late, out with coworkers, or on a business trip, he was really with

Amanda

They arrested her while she was on a trip in Austin

The second she saw the police, she collapsed. No fight

No resistance. Nothing

They brought her back to HPD

I asked to observe the interview, and they let me

Behind the oneway glass, I watched Amanda sit there

pale and sweating

The detective asked, Do you know why you’re here?”

She stared at the table and said nothing

What was your relationship with Mark Lawson?”

After a long silence, she finally said, We were having

an affair.”

What do you know about Jessica Lawson’s death?”

Silence again. Longer this time

The detective didn’t rush her. He just waited

The clock kept ticking

Finally Amanda looked up and said, Can I get

lawyer?”

The detective leaned back. That’s your right. But think carefully. If Mark talks first, you’re the accomplice left

behind. And you know exactly how courts treat the person who talks second.”

That was enough. She broke

And once she started talking, everything matched what

I’d already pieced together.
