Sienna froze for a beat. The color drained from her face, and tears sprang to her eyes as if on cue.

“Elena, I know you hate me.”

“But the couple didn’t do anything wrong…”

Miles frowned and turned to me.

“Elena, I never thought you’d become this kind of person.”

I stared at him, a faint, bitter smile tugging at my lips.

“Neither did I.”

Miles stared at me, clearly not expecting that answer. His brow tightened as he lowered his voice.

“Elena, this isn’t the time to act out of spite. Apologize to the couple first.”

Sienna’s eyes were red as she spoke softly.

“Elena, the bride is still in the bridal suite. Please just apologize to her.”

She made it sound as though she were trying to help me out.

But every word she said put a confession in my mouth.

The groom could no longer contain his anger. Pointing at us, he shouted, “Is this how you people do business?”

“You fight over the credit, then start pointing fingers the second something goes wrong?”

The two families crowded around us, jostling us as they demanded an explanation.

Sienna cried out and stumbled backward.

At almost the same moment, someone slammed into my shoulder. My foot slipped, and I hit the floor hard.

When Miles rushed toward us, I still looked up.

For that one second, my body reacted faster than my mind.

Eight years of habit made me expect him to come to me first.

Instead, he brushed straight past me and pulled Sienna into his arms.

“Don’t touch her!”

The ambulance arrived moments later, and the paramedics helped the bride out of the bridal suite.

Sienna clutched her wrist, her eyes red. Miles immediately stepped in to support her.

“Sienna, I’ll go to the hospital with you.”

I pushed myself off the floor. Blood ran from my knee down my shin.

One of the venue staff held out some tissues.

“Ms. Ward, you should take care of that too.”

I looked at Miles.

He was busy adjusting Sienna’s coat and never turned around.

In the ER hallway, Sienna sat beside Miles while he spoke softly to calm her. I sat on the opposite side while a nurse tended to the wound on my knee.

The antiseptic burned so badly that my fingers trembled.

It was not until the nurse said my name that Miles seemed to remember I was there.

“Elena?”

He walked over, and his brow furrowed when he saw the wound on my knee.

“How did you get hurt this badly?”

I did not answer.

“Elena, tonight was a mess. Don’t read too much into it.”

“Go home and get some rest. I’ll meet you for our first look tomorrow morning.”

I looked at him and slowly drew my hand back.

“Okay.”

He turned and walked away.

I headed in the opposite direction.

By the time my flight landed and my phone regained service, countless messages flooded the screen.
