“When are you letting her out?”

“Let her out? Vera stays gone, and she stays down here.” Simon’s bloodshot eyes snapped to Derek. “She destroyed your sister, and you’re still pleading her case?”

“She’s… she’s still my blood sister. What choice do I have?”

A strange, ugly laugh bubbled out of Simon. “She’s your sister? Ha-ha.”

A sliver of dread slid through Derek’s chest. Simon pulled a crumpled report from his jacket. “Read

this. Read about your ‘sister.””

Derek’s hands shook as he unfolded it. “Based on the analyzed genetic markers, the two tested individuals do not meet the criteria for a full-sibling relationship. A fraternal sibling relationship by both parents is excluded.”

“This-this is impossible. You tampered with it.”

Chloe stirred awake. “Ah, she’s up. Go on, ask your precious little sister yourself.”

Chloe’s gaze darted away, her mouth clamped shut.

Derek faced her head-on. “Did he threaten you? Don’t be afraid. Tell the truth.”

Simon tossed a phone at him. “Look at your sister’s greatest hits.”

Derek tapped the video. Chloe’s smug face filled the screen. “Hey, Vera, let me tell you a little secret. I’m not the real Chloe Channing. I’m a fake, just like you,”

“But what can I say? Everyone seems to like me better.”

And Derek remembered. Vera had told him Chloe was an impostor. She’d begged him to run another DNA test. And what had he done?Decided Vera was jealous and cut off her allowance for three months. She’d worked three jobs just to scrape together her tuition.

He swiped through the phone. The necklace-Chloe stole it. The wheelchair-Chloe sabotaged it. Even the ruined clothes in the closet-Chloe had shredded them herself.

Crack.

Derek hurled the phone against the wall.

He wrapped his hand around Chloe’s slender throat. “Who gave you the right to hurt Vera?”

Chloe gasped for air, slapping at his arm. He released her. She laughed through her tears. “You did. My wonderful big brother.”

“Don’t call me that.” His voice was raw.

“It’s you. And you.” She pointed a trembling finger at Simon. “You’re the ones who destroyed her.”

“Where is my real sister?”

“The real Chloe Channing has been dead for years. I pulled that necklace right off her body.”

The basement plunged into a suffocating silence.

“So… the paternity report?”

Chloe enunciated every word. “Fake. All of it.”

Thud.Blood rushed to Derek’s brain, and he collapsed.

Derek’s sudden stroke threw the Channing Corporation into chaos.

My mother struck like a blade. She acquired the company at a fire-sale price and slid the equity certificate in front of me.
