After I Left, His Empire Collapsed Chapter 39

“And after you left. I posted with Sadie every day. Instagram. All those photos. Why weren’t you jealous?”

“Before. You couldn’t stand seeing us close. One shared coffee. Same straw. You’d flip the table. Now nothing. How?”

I pulled my hand free. Cold.

“Yes. I flipped the table. And what did you call me? Controlling. Twisted. Said my mind was filthy. You and Sadie. Just colleagues. Innocent. Told me to stop imagining things.”

“You always wanted me to be the bigger person. Now I am. You should be happy.”

His grip tightened. Panic in his eyes.

“But you’re too big now. You don’t care at all. That’s not right. Go back to the old you.”

“Since you left, I haven’t stopped thinking about you. Not one day. All those posts? I wanted you jealous. Angry. You gave me nothing. I admit it. You win.”

“This cold war. The punishment. It’s been long enough. Look. I faced my fears. Flew to Europe. For you. So stop being angry. Come back with me. Please.”

He’d overcome his deepest phobia to cross an ocean. For me. That was something.

But I wasn’t going back.

The wounds he left wouldn’t vanish because he’d changed. Or because he’d apologized.
