After I Left, His Empire Collapsed Chapter 31

After I Left, His Empire Collapsed Chapter 31

Dead air.

Then the murmurs started. My former coworkers. Buzzing.

“Vanessa’s right. Without her, we would’ve folded years ago.”

“Dylan really lost his mind. Traded the actual talent for a decoration.”

“You remember that impossible client? Nobody could close him. Six months of nothing. Vanessa made one call. Ten minutes. Signed a decade.”

“If she’s really out, this company’s done.”

The voices carried just enough. Everyone in that conference room heard.

I could imagine their faces. Dylan. Sadie. A palette of humiliation.

I laughed under my breath.

The company collapsing? Not my problem. Dylan dug this grave himself.

I spoke into the silence.

“Show’s over. Hanging up.”

“Don’t.”

Dylan’s voice. Urgent. Breaking.

“I have something important to say.”

I waited for the explosion. The accusations.

Instead, a breath. Then his voice dropped. Soft. Sweet. Like we were still together. Like nothing had happened.

“Vanessa. I was wrong.”

I blinked. Almost laughed. Was this the same man who’d threatened to destroy my career ten minutes ago?

Then I understood. His biggest client was about to walk. The only move left was begging me to clean up his mess.

It was almost touching. This sudden humility.

“Mr. Croft. No need for the sweet talk. We broke up. Remember?”

“Save it. I’m not flying back to America to fix your disaster.”
