Julian’s expression twisted. Embarrassment. Then fury.

“That’s completely different.”

“That was just something I said in the heat of the moment. You have zero judgment. What am I even paying you for? Causing me problems.”

“You’re fired. Pack your things. Get out.”

He hung up. Took a careful breath. Eyed me.

“Vanessa. This is all a misunderstanding. HR was incompetent. Couldn’t read between the lines.”

“I was busy. I clicked approve by accident. I didn’t want you to leave. The approval doesn’t count.”

I cut him off.

“Doesn’t matter what you wanted. You approved it. Legally, it’s effective. I’m gone.”

His face went through several shades of white. He opened his mouth.

Sadie beat him to it. Her eyes welled up. Voice trembling.

“Julian. I’m so sorry. This is all my fault.”

“If my visa hadn’t been denied. If I hadn’t asked you to do the registration. The photos. Vanessa wouldn’t be so upset she’d quit.”

“I’m the one who should leave. I’ll resign. Fly home. You two should stop fighting because of me. I can’t be the reason your relationship falls apart.”

She reached for my arm. Fake pleading.

“Vanessa. The economy is brutal right now. Jobs are scarce. What can you even find after leaving here? Just apologize to Julian. Don’t destroy your career over this.”

The words triggered something in Julian. He latched onto the threat.

“Vanessa. You’re in your thirties. Your career has peaked. Who else would take you?”

“Apologize to Sadie. Go back to the office. I’ll pretend that resignation email never happened. Otherwise, when you can’t find work anywhere, don’t come crawling back to me.”

Before I could answer, my friend stepped forward.

“Who says she can’t find work?”

“You haven’t heard? She accepted an offer from a top firm in Amsterdam. She leaves tonight.”

“We were on our way to her goodbye party when we ran into you two. Bad luck.”
