After I Laid Five Golden Dragon Eggs, the Dragon King Regretted Chapter 06

After standing there for a moment, I remembered Valerius’s 

promise to send people to help me. 

No! 

If he wouldn’t take us back to Aethelgard, he wasn’t going to take my babies either. 

But Valerius was the Dragon King. 

The Council of Elders was desperate for heirs. If they found out 

I had five children, they would surely take them and cast me 

aside. 

The thought made me panic. 

I wouldn’t be another mother who abandoned her children. 

I packed my things immediately and set off with the babies. 

Fortunately, being drakelings, they were smart and 

well–behaved, causing no trouble along the way. 

Half a month later, we settled in Blackstone Canyon. It was far 

from Briar Hollow, surrounded by dense woods where no one 

would easily find us. 

The babies grew incredibly fast. When they hatched, they were only as long as my forearm; now they were running all over 

the canyon. 

The eldest was the cubbiest, he can polish off three full bowls 

of thick oats in a single sitting. 

The fifth was the smallest and most timid, insisting on 

sleeping in my arms every night. 

The five of them would line up to help me fetch water from the stream, their tails wagging and knocking over wild blooms. 

Just as we settled in, the script went wild:

Through the script, I learned the whole story. 

It turned out that Valerius hadn’t been asking the Wild–kin for 

a fertility rite, but for their Aegis. 

This Aegis was a legendary relic meant to withstand a Heavenly Trial. 

The Dragon Lords faced a Great Heavenly Trial every three millennia. All dragons would face it, but the King had to bear the brunt of it. If he failed, the whole tribe was doomed. 

Valerius could barely handle his personal Trial every century, but the Great Heavenly Trial was due this year. 

Normally, a century would have been enough for him to 

recover, but his Trial a hundred years ago–the one where he 

collapsed at my door–had been interrupted because of me and was never properly completed. 

It was because of me that his Trial had come so soon! 

[Ahhh! The Great Heavenly Trial is ten times stronger than a 

personal one! The Elders forced him to beg the Wild–kin for 

the Aegis, or the whole tribe would die with him.] 

[So he hurried the annulment and played along with the 

heroine, not because he was unfaithful, but because he didn’t 

know if he would survive.] 

[Damn, so giving her the Heart–Scale was to ensure she’d be 

protected if he died?] 

[He hid it from everyone. Even the Elders didn’t know his true 

plan. He never intended to trade a marriage for the relic; he 

was going to face it alone. But without his Heart–Scale, he’s as good as dead.] 

As the lines of text drifted by, the gourd I was using to scoop 

water fell into the stream with a splash. 

No wonder he had spoken as if giving a final testament. 

No wonder he was so unwilling to take us back to Aethelgard. 

The babies were startled. The eldest tugged at my sleeve: “Mommy, what’s wrong?” 

I gripped his hand and told him, “Look after your siblings. 

Mommy has to go find your Daddy.” 

I had to return the Heart–Scale. 

As I rushed toward Aethelgard, the script told me that Valerius and Seraphina had completely broken off their arrangement. 

Seraphina had taken the Aegis back to her tribe. 

Without hesitation, I turned and headed for the Wild–kin lands. 

Meeting Seraphina, I got straight to the point: “Princess Seraphina, I beg you to lend the Aegis to Valerius.” 

“So you know everything,” she froze for a moment, then looked away, her voice cold. “Then you should also know that I want to lend it, but Valerius won’t take it. He told me himself he never planned on using the Aegis.” 

“Stop kneeling. I’m powerless here.” 

She turned to leave. 

I blocked her path, falling to my knees and grabbing her leg. 

“Princess, please,” my voice was shaking. “I was wrong. I shouldn’t have fled, and I shouldn’t have gotten in the way of your marriage. If you help him, I’ll do anything. I’ll never see him again. I’ll even give you all five of the babies.” 

Saying this, I pulled the Heart–Scale from my neck and held it out with both hands. 

The scale lay in my palm, its golden light flickering weakly. 

“This is Valerius’s scale. Take it. Go to him. He can’t survive 

without it…” 

Seraphina looked at the scale, her expression shifting rapidly. 

Finally, she shook her head. 

“It’s too late.” 

Before I could ask what she meant, the sky suddenly went black. 

A howling wind carrying grit and sand roared from the distance. The air was thick with the scent of ozone and burning, as if the world itself were trembling. 

I whipped around. 

Toward Aethelgard, the clouds were churning like spilled ink. Red–gold lightning struck again and again, each roar making the ground shudder beneath me. 

The script scrolled frantically: 

[It’s started! The Dragon Lords‘ Great Heavenly Trial!] 

[The scale of this is terrifying. You can feel the pressure from this far away.] 

[The lead doesn’t have his scale. How can he survive? This is suicide!] 

[Nooo! I chose the wrong ship! Lead, hold on!] 

The scale in my hand suddenly became as hot as a burning coal. 

It sensed its master. 

It sensed its master in the center of that storm, being torn apart by ten thousand bolts of lightning. 

I stood up, clutched the scale, and ran toward Aethelgard. 

Seraphina shouted behind me: “It’s no use! You have no magic! You won’t even survive the first bolt!”
